Weโ€™re a few days into National Reconciliation Week, and itโ€™s a powerful reminder that reconciliation isnโ€™t just a moment, itโ€™s an ongoing commitment we all share.

This yearโ€™s theme, All In, calls on all Australians to step forward, take action, and be part of meaningful change, not just during this week, but every day.

At AnglicareCQ, we recognise that reconciliation must be genuine and sustained. Itโ€™s not about symbolic gestures or one-off acknowledgements, itโ€™s about listening, learning, and taking meaningful action that builds respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Reconciliation asks us to reflect on our shared history, acknowledge the past, and commit to doing what we can, both individually and collectively, to create a more inclusive future.

As the week continues, thereโ€™s still time to get involved, whether thatโ€™s attending a local event, starting a conversation, or considering how you can go beyond words and contribute in a real and lasting way.

๐ŸŒฟ National Reconciliation Week 2026 ๐ŸŒฟ

Today marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week (27 May โ€“ 3 June), a time for all Australians to reflect on our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and consider how each of us can contribute to reconciliation.

This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œAll Inโ€, calls on everyone to play an active role, recognising that reconciliation requires genuine commitment and shared responsibility.

At AnglicareCQ, we are committed to reconciliation and to continuing to strengthen respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities, and cultures. This week provides an important opportunity to reflect on that commitment and the role we all play in progressing meaningful change.

We encourage everyone to take time to learn, listen, and reflect, and to consider what being โ€œAll Inโ€ for reconciliation looks like in your everyday actions.

NEW REPORT ๐Ÿ“ข Rental affordability in Central Queensland has hit crisis point.

Anglicare Australiaโ€™s 2026 Rental Affordability Snapshot has been released today, and the findings are deeply concerning for communities across Central Queensland.

The Snapshot surveyed nearly 49,000 rental listings across Australia. It shows that people on the lowest incomes have virtually no access to the private rental market. This national picture reflects what we are seeing every day in Central Queensland, from Emerald and Blackwater to Rockhampton, Gladstone, Longreach and the Capricorn Coast.

Across Australia, the Snapshot found:
๐Ÿ˜Ÿ 0 rentals were affordable for someone on Youth Allowance
๐Ÿ˜Ÿ Just 1 rental nationwide was affordable for a person on JobSeeker
๐Ÿ˜Ÿ Only 0.2% of rentals were affordable for a single Age Pensioner
๐Ÿ˜Ÿ A full time minimum wage worker could afford just 0.5% of listings
๐Ÿ˜Ÿ Even a couple with two minimum wage incomes could afford only 14.8% of rentals

These numbers paint a stark picture, but for many people in Central Queensland, this isnโ€™t new. Itโ€™s their lived reality.

Local families are struggling to secure long term rentals. Workers are being forced to travel further for employment because they canโ€™t find affordable housing close to their jobs. Young people leaving home for the first time are discovering there are simply no options within reach. Older residents on fixed incomes are facing impossible choices between rent, food, and essential bills. ๐Ÿ

AnglicareCQ continues to support people across the region who are experiencing housing stress, but the scale of the crisis is growing. The private market alone cannot meet the needs of our communities. Long term investment in public and community housing is essential if we want to ensure that everyone in Central Queensland has a safe, stable place to live. ๐Ÿงก

As Anglicare Australia Executive Director Kasy Chambers said today, the housing crisis is no longer a short-term shock, it is becoming a structural feature of the system. Without meaningful reform and investment, affordability will continue to decline, and more people will be pushed into housing insecurity.

AnglicareCQ stands ready to work with all levels of government and the community sector to ensure Central Queenslanders have access to the homes they need. ๐Ÿค

๐Ÿงต โ€œStitched With Love, Shared With Care"

AnglicareCQ would like to extend a big thank you to Avrial and Myrtle for donating a collection of beautiful handmade quilts.

Their generosity will bring warmth and comfort to the young people in our Residential Care homes across Gladstone, Rockhampton and Emerald.

Weโ€™re also excited to be expanding our support in Emerald with the purchase of another property, and these quilts will help make that new space feel like home from day one.

A special note of appreciation to Myrtle, who once taught religious education to our CEO. Itโ€™s incredibly meaningful to see that connection come full circle in such a heartfelt way.

Thank you both for your kindness and for supporting the young people in our care. ๐Ÿ’›

Every child deserves a safe, stable childhood - but right now, too many Queensland families are struggling to meet the basics.

Thousands are facing housing stress, food insecurity, and rising living costs, and the number of children in residential care has surged. These arenโ€™t just statistics - theyโ€™re real kids and real families who deserve better.

Thatโ€™s why AnglicareCQ is proud to support the Raising Queensland campaign, calling for meaningful change so Central Queensland families are supported and local children can thrive.

โœจ If you believe every child deserves safety, support, and opportunity, add your voice.
