Central Queensland Today’s standing as one of the state’s premier newspapers was again highlighted at the recent Queensland Country Press Association Awards on the Sunshine Coast on Friday night.

CQ Today won three first place awards, with senior journalist Matthew Pearce taking home the Individual Journalistic Excellence Award.

⛏️ Central Highlands Appeal 🚁

The Central Highlands is home to hardworking communities spread across mining towns, rural properties and small towns — where emergencies can happen fast and every minute counts.

Whether it’s a serious workplace incident, a remote medical emergency, or a crash on one of the region’s highways, Rescue300 helps bring urgent assistance when and where it matters most.

In 2025, the Central Highlands was CapRescue’s busiest shire. This year alone, the crew have already conducted 60 rescues throughout the region. Donations to the annual appeal ensure Rescue300 remains ready to respond and that help is on its way.

🚁 From Patient to Supporter 📸

Earlier this year, Kaitlyn experienced firsthand what it means when help is on its way.

Following a sudden medical emergency, she later gave back to CapRescue through a community fundraiser that brought together local photographers, businesses, friends and families in support of the service.

The Storm and Me

What began as a sudden medical emergency in Yeppoon quickly became critical as her condition deteriorated. A Red Blanket response was activated and CapRescue was tasked by Queensland Health, bringing specialist emergency care directly to her side.

One of the most memorable highlights from the 2023 CapRescue Ball came when former patient Kev Mauger performed a song he wrote following his rescue.

As the 30th Anniversary Ball approaches, it felt worth sharing a very special piece of that night, recorded by an audience member.

Moments like these are a reminder of the people and community behind the service.

Tickets are available for this year’s event, with patients Fiona & Bevan Baker taking to the stage to share their own journey with CapRescue.

We would love to see the community come together once again for this special night. 🙌🏻💛

🙌🏻 “I am thankful every day...” 🚁

Stories like Fiona and Bevan’s are why community support matters.

After being flown to hospital by CapRescue’s Rescue300 crew following a serious motorbike crash, Fiona says the experience made her realise “the extent of rescues required for such a big area, and how much money, time and effort it takes to provide such a service.”

Community support helps keep CapRescue responding across Central Queensland when people need it most.
