💙 Dinner out with friends and a medication phone reminder, plus a blood glucose check before bed.

Everyday moments come with extra decisions, planning and uncertainty for people with diabetes.

That’s why Clinical Nurse Diabetes Educators Anna, Marysia and Christine are passionate about focusing on what happens outside of the clinic

Based across Robina Health Precinct and the Helensvale Community Health Centre, the Community Diabetes service is multidisciplinary team of dieticians, pharmacists, GPs and endocrinologists, who work closely supporting people living with type one and type two diabetes to help them better understand their condition, navigate change and feel more confident in their choices.

“It’s really rewarding first meeting someone, engaging with them and seeing the great outcomes they achieve in the community with our support,” Anna said.

🌿📚 Colour, creativity and calm have arrived at the Book Nook at Robina Hospital.

The refreshed space now features a stunning hand-painted mural by local artist Michelle Le Plastrier, inspired by the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape.

"Art can transform and soften clinical spaces into environments that feel more human, welcoming and emotionally supportive," Michelle said.

"By referencing familiar shapes from the local landscape, people can feel more connected to the space - it's a way to invite the outside inside and create a garden to read, rest and recharge in."

Cameron reckons he had about 40 jobs before a grieving family pointed him towards his dream job.

“I was working in disability care and the child I was caring for sadly passed on,” Cameron said, whose colourful resume includes furniture removalist 🚚, Dracula’s barman 🧛and pet wash business owner. 🐶

“He was nine and his parents pushed me towards nursing. They said, 'You’re good at this' and encouraged me to retrain. I hadn’t studied for 20 years so that was a shock.”

The decision to forge a new path led Cameron to mental health nursing and a home at Gold Coast Health, where he has spent the past eight years caring for people with complex, long-term needs at our Cordyline Residential Recovery Service.

“Being a residential service, you get time to really know someone and I love that,” the Clinical Nurse said.

“I think therapeutic relationships are the cornerstone of mental health nursing. Once you build that relationship with a consumer, it changes everything. We get to know them so well that you know
what works for them as individuals.”

What's one of the highlights of the job?

“When former residents pop by," Cameron said.

"Not long ago one of our consumers made the effort to visit and tell us he was going well. That was really special.” 💖

We love to celebrate our unique diversity and the benefits and strengths this brings to our health service.

As part of Multicultural Queensland Month, we hosted our annual Multicultural Festival at Robina Hospital to celebrate our many different cultures.

Activities included a Latin-inspired Zumba lesson, traditional henna art, Eritrean coffee-making and an African drumming circle, with performances from the Australian National Chinese Women’s Federation, and the Gold Coast Filipino Australian Cultural Ensemble.

Clinical Nurse Shirley’s dance group performed traditional Filipino dances that show the beauty, history and culture of the Philippines.

“For me, celebrating culture is also about pride, belonging and passing our traditions onto the new generation,” Shirley said.

“I want our young people to be proud of where they come from while also feeling proud to be part of
Australia’s multicultural community.

“I am proud to be part of a diverse and multicultural health service where people from many different
cultures and backgrounds work together to care for our community.”

A new chapter in older adult care has begun at Robina Hospital with patients being welcomed into the refurbished H2 East ward.

The contemporary 20-bed ward includes a 10-bed Acute Cognitive Unit and 10-bed Acute Geriatric Unit, expanding access to specialised cognitive and geriatric services closer to home for patients and families across the central and southern Gold Coast.

Featuring a dedicated outdoor garden terrace, calming artwork from local Gold Coast artists and Gold Coast Health staff, and spaces designed to promote comfort, familiarity and wellbeing, H2 East has been thoughtfully created to support older adults with complex cognitive, medical and functional needs.

Nurse Unit Manager Tracey said the opening represented an important milestone for older adult care at Robina Hospital.

“Creating spaces that feel welcoming, familiar and supportive is incredibly important for older adults, particularly those experiencing cognitive impairment,” Tracey said.

“H2 East has been designed to help patients feel comfortable during their hospital stay while supporting the delivery of specialised care.” 👏

Congratulations to the incredible team who helped bring this vision to life and are now welcoming the first patients through the doors.

📸 From behind the lens to the walls of H2 East at Robina Hospital.

Robina Hospital Retail Food Supervisor Phisit (Wow) Phochiangrak recently visited the new H2 East ward to
see his aerial photograph, Tallebudgera, installed ahead of its opening.

Selected through Gold Coast Health's Creative Health Hub staff photography competition, Tallebudgera is one of eight staff photographs now displayed throughout the new H2 East ward.

Showcasing familiar Gold Coast landscapes, the collection helps create a calming and welcoming environment for older patients receiving specialised care in the 20-bed Acute Geriatric Unit (AGU) and Acute Cognitive Unit (ACU). 💙

Phisit said seeing his work in the space for the first time was a proud moment.

"It feels amazing, I hope when people walk past these photographs, they can forget they're in a hospital for a little while,” Phisit said.

“I hope they feel warm, happy and like they're somewhere they can relax and recover."

For Phisit, the most rewarding part is knowing his work will be experienced by so many others.

"It means a lot because it's here for patients, families and staff to enjoy. When people sit in the lounge and dining area, they'll be able to stop, reflect and appreciate the artwork. It feels like a small art gallery, and I love that everyone gets to experience it together." 🖼️

Brett was on shift as a nurse in Princess Alexandra (PA) Emergency Department when he suffered a stroke in 2009.

"During handover my face felt a little numb, and then 15 minutes later I was trying to put on a lead gown in a RESUS room and couldn't get my arm through the sleeve," he said.

"That was when I realised something wasn’t right. Then my speech started changing. I thought I was talking normally, but I wasn’t. At that point everyone realised something serious was happening. They got me into a bed and started treatment."

Brett suffered an ischaemic stroke due to a clotting disorder called Factor V Leiden deficiency. Thankfully, he got treatment quickly and the deficits were minor - he was back working in the ED after a month.

"When a stroke patient arrives in the ED now, I’m at their bedside almost immediately because I know how frightening it is," he said.

"I understand what it can mean. I know how life-changing it can be and it's taught me to make the most of life and not wait for the perfect opportunity because none of us know what’s around the corner."

Brett is now one of our Clinical Nurse Consultants at Robina's ED, providing top-notch care with a side of humour to everyone who comes through our doors.

Ridge Barredo has many claims to fame. ⭐

He’s a Married at First Sight success story,💍he’s competing at his third Commonwealth Games...🏅

Then there’s his most important role – as a Child and Youth mental health nurse. 🙏

“My favourite thing about working in mental health is seeing a smile on a kid's face when they're discharged,” Ridge said, who found a home at Gold Coast Health after finding love with MAFS partner Jade Pywell.

“They often arrive unwell and upset and to see them leave with a smile and thanking us is always a win. That’s such a good feeling.”

Ridge started weightlifting when he finished playing rugby league as a 20-year-old.

A decade on and he’s one of the best weightlifters in the country, with PBs of 161kg in the ‘snatch’, almost 200kg in the ‘clean and jerk’ and a big chance of standing on the podium in Glasgow.

“When I started, I just wanted to be the best I could and it turns out that was good enough to go to the Commonwealth Games,” Ridge said.

"I finished 8th in 2018 and 5th in 2022 so this one has to be top three.”

And how does it feel knowing a special group of youngsters will be cheering him on from Robina?

“It's nice,” he smiles.

“We spend a lot of time with the kids and they know all about the Games. It's nice to know I'll have a little cheer squad here."
