This afternoon we were activated to a vehicle fire on the highway just on the Eastern edge of town. Thankfully the driver was safely out of the vehicle and despite being a hybrid vehicle, the batteries did not cause any additional problems during this incident.

With only a limited crew available we were grateful to be quickly backed up by crews from Albion Park Rural Fire Brigade and FRNSW Moss Vale.

The vehicle was completely extinguished and then our crew remained on scene for an additional hour monitoring the battery before deeming safe and the vehicle being towed away.

Thanks for the patience of all motorists on a narrow section of the highway.

The weather is being extremely favorable to reduce the fire hazards around the state at the moment. You’ve probably already noticed a few HR’s in progress or smelt some smoke. This will probably continue at least through till Sunday.

Several burns are hoped to be accomplished nearby in the water catchment area north of Tourist Road, and in Kangaroo Valley.

The window to accomplish these burns effectively is very short. Please expect more smoke over the next few days and take appropriate precautions, such as keeping your doors and windows closed and considering whether to leave washing out on the line.

Smoke will settle lower overnight as temperatures cool, there is no need to call 000 unless you can see an unattended out of control fire. Thank you for your understanding as all agencies look to reduce the bush fire hazards in our area.

Hazard Reduction Notification - Yerrinbool

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service Firefighters, supported by NSW Rural Fire Service Firefighters will be undertaking a strategic hazard reduction burn from tomorrow (Wednesday, 15 April) in the Bargo River State Conservation Park in the vicinity of Yerrinbool and Hill Top (as depicted on the map below).

Residents in the immediate area are likely to see and smell smoke throughout the duration of the burn which is expected to last 3 days, including from the Hume Motorway. Please only report unattended fires to Triple Zero (000).

It’s a wild day out there Robertson! We’ve had three call outs already to trees and power lines down.
In an emergency always call 000. If it’s not a life threatening situation here are some important numbers to keep handy:
For trees down across road call Wingecarribee Shire Council on 1300 680 888. This number is active 24/7.
For other emergency situations contact SES on 132500.

Training information for neighbours:

Over the next couple of hours there will be a training scenario happening in the Southern end of Caalong Street.
You may see some fire appliances and volunteers working around them. All just training, no need for alarm, just for your information!
We’ll try and be all wrapped up by 9pm at the latest.

Thanks!

The Official Bush Fire Danger Period will conclude at midnight tomorrow (31 March 2026) for the Wingecarribee Shire Council and Wollondilly Shire Council LGA's.

From Wednesday 1 April, fire permits will no longer be required for residents, except those properties within the town limits of Warragamba, Picton, Mittagong, Moss Vale, Bowral and Bundanoon, who are required to obtain a fire permit from Fire & Rescue NSW all year round.

Even though a fire permit is no longer required, you must still notify your neighbours and the local fire authority 24 hours before burning as well as comply with any Council Backyard Burning Policies.

Before lighting up, you should also check the forecast weather conditions and have sufficient equipment on hand to control and contain the fire to your own property. Failure to notify neighbours or the RFS, or allowing a fire to escape can result in significant fines.

To notify of your intent to burn, use the online burn notification tool at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify or call your local Fire Control Centre during business hours.

Everyone’s taken a breath and starting to reflect…...we want to add our thanks to the Robertson Community, all the visitors, and especially the absolute legends on the committee at Robertson Show for what was an amazing weekend.

We had fog, we had scorching sun, we had a thunder storm or two. We love this village!

From the kids at the Spud Olympics on Friday, through the Muster in the Mist and as you pored into the carpark on Saturday until the storm, we loved seeing so many happy faces and we really appreciate the kind words and donations you gave us. The show is our main fundraiser for the year as we coordinate the parking and all the funds raised go back into improving our ability to serve our local community and others like it in their time of need.

Thanks everyone, and good on all those 2WD drivers that kept their cool in the rain and made it out of the paddock alive 😉 🚙

Happy Women’s Day to one and all. Thanks to all the women who volunteer their time for the community through this amazing organisation. Can you spot our own local firefighters in these photos?

Today we recognise and celebrate the incredible women of the NSW RFS Southern Highlands as we mark International Women’s Day. 👩‍🚒🔥

From the fireground to leadership and brigade support roles, women are a vital part of our team and our communities. Their service, skill and commitment strengthen the NSW Rural Fire Service every day.

This year’s theme — “Balance the Scales” — reminds us that stronger, safer and resilient communities are built when everyone has the opportunity to contribute and lead.

Today we thank the women of our brigades and organisation for the work they do, the leadership they show, and the example they set for the next generation.

How will you keep yourself safe tomorrow? Start by knowing there is a total fire ban from midnight Saturday 10 January. So no fires in the open.
Think about how to keep yourself and your family cool. Is home or somewhere else the safest place to be? Do you have a plan for your animals? Check you have Hazards Near Me set up on your phone and a watch zone created for home or where ever you will be.
Know your triggers, plan the steps you need to take if a fire breaks out near you.
Stay cool and safe

Extreme FDR & Total Fire Ban Declared for Saturday 10 January

Hot, dry and windy conditions are forecast for tomorrow which will see the Fire Danger Rating rise to Extreme. As a result, a Total Fire Ban has also been declared from midnight tonight for 24 hours for the Wingecarribee Shire Council and Wollondilly Shire Council areas.

During a Total Fire Ban you cannot light, maintain or use a fire in the open, or to carry out any activity in the open that causes, or is likely to cause, a fire.

Know what you will do if threatened by fire, review your Bush Fire Survival Plan and be ready to take immediate action. Report all fires without a fire truck in attendance to Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Take extra care during the heatwave Robertson.

Fire Permits Suspended until Sunday 11 January

As the Fire Danger is forecast to increase over the coming days due to the heat wave conditions due to effect much of NSW, all fire permits are suspended until Sunday 11 January for the Wingecarribee Shire Council and Wollondilly Shire Council areas.

Ensure that any piles are fully extinguished and are checked regularly given the extreme temperatures and risk of reignition. If you have been burning in recent weeks, re-check the site, turn it over and ensure that it is cold and safe.

Report all unattended fires to Triple Zero (000) immediately.

As we welcome in a new year, we thank the Robertson community for your support through 2025. Last year saw over 1400 incidents attended by volunteers throughout the Southern Highlands team (Wingecarribee and Wollondilly Shires). 89 of those were attended by Robertson members. The volunteers of the Southern Highlands are a pretty amazing bunch of people, and we are grateful to be a part of it and hopefully be a little help and comfort in what may be one of your worst days.
We couldn't do any of it though without the support of the community.

Have a fantastic New Years period, please take your time when travelling, and if in doubt about fire restrictions/allowances through the holidays just reach out to us.

Bring on 2026!

As we farewell 2025 and prepare to welcome in the New Year, we want to take a moment to recognise the incredible commitment of our dedicated volunteers and partner agencies.

Over the past 12 months, our volunteer firefighters have responded to 1,438 incidents across the Wingecarribee Shire Council & Wollondilly Shire Council areas. This is an increase of 141 incidents on last year, making 2025 the busiest year for the Southern Highlands in the past five years. Our volunteers have not only had a busy year locally but have also travelled across NSW, Australia and even to Canada to assist with firefighting efforts.

From motor vehicle accidents and storms to fires and assisting partner agencies, our volunteers have once again stepped up, often at all hours, in challenging conditions and away from their families to assist others in their time of need.

Thank you to every volunteer member, their families, supporters and employers who has made a contribution this year.

As we head into the New Year, we wish everyone a safe and happy New Year. Please continue to be Bush Fire Ready and ever vigilant as we move through the warmer months.
