Today, Firefighter Kidd paid the ultimate price in protecting his community. Rest in Peace, your watch has ended.

Today we mourn the loss of an extraordinary member of the Hawkesbury community, firefighter Michael Kidd. Michael paid the ultimate price while battling a house fire at Grose Vale, north-west of Sydney earlier today. He was known as a kind and selfless man who had been working to keep others safe for many years.

Michael is understood to have been struck by a falling wooden beam during the blaze at a home on Grose Vale Road at 7:55am. Firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Rural Fire Service provided initial medical assistance. Tragically, despite their efforts, he died at the scene.

Michael served as an on-call firefighter, attached to Richmond Fire Station, since joining us in 2010. He was awarded a National Emergency Medal and a Premier's Bushfire Citation for protecting his local community during the 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires. In 2020, he was recognised with a Long Service & Good Conduct Medal. Michael had also been a volunteer member of the RFS since 1989, for which he received a National Medal and a Long Service Medal in 2013.

Michael is survived by his wife and two adult children. The impact of Michael's death will be widely felt for a long time to come. We are supporting his family and his colleagues at this difficult time.

A busy start to the day for Fire and Rescue NSW Station 034 Riverwood. Firefighters completed a technical rescue in difficult conditions to remove a critically injured dog, and its owner with significant injuries, after an unprovoked attack by 2 larger dogs.

The owner and injured pup fled into the mangroves to escape the attack, where they became severely stuck in the mud.

2 officers from NSW Police Force were also rescued from the mud after entering the mangroves to protect the owner from an ongoing attack.

Our thoughts are with the owner and the injured dog and wish for a full recovery.

Today is Saint Florians Day otherwise known as International Firefighters Day.

This morning, members of Fire and Rescue NSW Station 034 Riverwood C platoon were among many firefighters across the state honored for there dedication to the people of NSW at a ceremony at City of Sydney Fire Station.

Married for 41 years, Tony and Irene Danaskos almost lost each other last April when Tony suffered a cardiac episode on playing fields across from Riverwood Fire Station. Unconscious and not breathing, Tony was saved by the quick actions of the crew, who took over CPR and used a defibrillator until paramedics arrived.

Today there were plenty of tears as Tony and Irene were reunited with the crew at our annual awards marking St Florian's Day - the International Day of Firefighters.

Firefighters Matthew Ward, Adam Hartup and Jeffrey Lay (pictured) were presented with the Commissioner's Resuscitation Award. Ian Lamp was not able to attend.

Details of others to receive St Florian's Day awards are on our website, https://www.fire.nsw.gov.au/incident.php?record=recYncBFaljChjS6u.

A minute's silence was observed to remember Queensland firefighter Izabella Nash who died serving her community yesterday. We pray that St Florian is watching out for you and all the dedicated men and women who serve in times of emergency and remember all those who have lost their lives working to protect others.

Our thoughts are with our colleagues from NSW Ambulance

Our hearts are with the NSW Ambulance service following the shocking death of an on-duty paramedic in Sydney’s south today. We are thinking of the family, friends and colleagues of the dedicated first responder who will not go home tonight.

“A CHRISTMAS QUACKER!”
On Wednesday 21st December Fire and Rescue NSW Pump 34 Riverwood and Rescue Pump 20 Hurstville were responded to a house fire in Mortdale . On arrival, Pump 34 Riverwood was met by distraught owner who told them the granny flat out the back was on fire and she was extremely worried about the “rescue duck” her daughter had recently acquired.

Riverwoods crew entered the smoke logged house and whilst commencing fire attack they could hear “quack quack” coming from behind a closed door. The crew opened the door and found the duckling huddled in a box .

Quickly grabbing the duck, a firefighter tucked it away inside his turnout coat to prevent smoke inhalation to the rescue duck. The now “rescued rescue duck” was reunited with its very appreciative owner 😊

Another very difficult incident which unfortunately resulted in significant loss of life. Please make sure you have working smoke detectors in your home. Our thoughts are with those affected by this mornings fire in Hinchinbrook.

As firefighters, we’re trained to “risk a little, to save a little. Risk a lot, to save a lot.”

Earlier today, crews in Sydney went above and beyond in an attempt to save multiple lives at a well-developed house fire in Hinchinbrook. Despite best efforts, multiple have died at the scene, whilst some have been transported to hospital.

What makes it even worse is that these deaths may have been prevented if only the property had working smoke alarms.

Our thoughts are with the victims of this tragic incident, including the first responders that gave their most to protect those involved. Especially the 2 firefighters who were injured in their efforts to assist.

We urge you to make sure the people you care about are safe, including your non-English speaking friends, your elderly neighbour or your ‘she’ll be right’ uncle. Ensure yours and their smoke alarms are working, and that your family has a fire escape plan. For more info go to https://www.fire.nsw.gov.au/

******1 Male Resuscitated******
Friday 1st April 2022 a call was received at 34 station Riverwood from a member of the public reporting that at playing fields across from the fire station, a male playing soccer had become unconscious, was not breathing and CPR was being conducted.

An ambulance had been called however the member of the public requested our attendance also. Sydney fire communications were notified and Pump 34 responded.

On arrival 1 male was receiving compressions with defibrillator attached.

The crew took over CPR with 1 Firefighter on compressions, whilst the other firefighter inserted an OP airway and attached medical oxygen to the patient.

The patient had received 1 shock from an automated external defibrillator by civilians prior to brigade arrival, with another shock delivered by Fire and Rescue NSW Firefighters before the arrival of NSW Ambulance. Firefighters continued compressions while paramedics attached their life pack monitor.

Patient started showing signs of life with a strong radial pulse and breathing normally. Medical Retrival unit attended where they took over the scene. Pump 34 departed the scene shortly after.

The male was transported to hospital. Well done to the members of the public who commenced CPR and early defibrillation, this gave the man the best chance of survival.

"And all of the 5 little ducks came back"

This afternoon Pump 34 Riverwood responded to rescue a lonesome duckling from a possum box approximately 6 meters up a tree.

The Mother duck had decided to set up home in the possum box, with herself and 4 other ducklings bailing out and surviving the fall to earth, unscathed. Unfortunately when the family had flown the coop, they left one stranded little duckling behind.

A local resident (who happened to be a retired Firefighter from FRNSW), contacted the station for assistance when he was unable to reach the possum box and could hear the quacks for help.

Riverwood Fire Station arrived and with the use of our extension ladder, rescued the duck and they were reunited with their family.
