Meet some of our newest Redcliffe SES members who have just been trained and qualified in storm damage management. When the storms come - and they will - SES volunteers are first responders. Your call for help by dialling 132-500 goes straight to a SES emergency desk in Brisbane who then task it to a group. During a big storm event Redcliffe can end up with 100's of tasks on the peninsular so we welcome more trained members.

Whether it's good or bad news, bringing closure for friends and family of missing loved ones is another vital role for Redcliffe SES volunteers. In-depth training to identify objects and tracks plus being able to work cohesively together with QPS while operating GPS and radio systems mean we can quickly respond when tasked. Hot and humid conditions along with thick bush, bitey critters and difficult terrain is common place. We often go where 'almost' no man has gone before!

Did you know your local Redcliffe SES volunteer can end up far from home when emergencies happen? This year alone we had members sent on deployments from Bundaberg to as far away as Western Australia! Usually a deployment will consist of two days travelling and three days solid work. Repairs to roofs, clearing downed trees, removing mud and furniture from homes or even missing person searches. Where there's a need - there's a SES volunteer.

If you're new to Redcliffe (or Queensland) you may hear the phrase 'storm season' mentioned. For our members here on the peninsular the bulk of our call outs are between November through to January when the storms usually arrive with little warning. Holes in roofs, skylights, downed trees, ripped off solar panels and whirlybirds are common resulting in water entering your homes. To apply temporary repairs our crews need to be heights qualified. Recently we added another 14 SES members from surrounding districts including Redcliffe to our pool of qualified heights trained crews. You may surprised to know that each job needs a minimum of four qualified members!

It's SES Week + our 50th anniversary!! Each year from the 24th to the 30th of August, we honour the hard work and outstanding efforts of the SES staff and volunteers across Queensland. Your local SES group here in Redcliffe are no exception. Over the coming weeks we'll introduce you to some of our members whether they're veterans or brand new. Last week when most people were heading to sleep, Redcliffe SES sent a vehicle full of members to attend a Search and Rescue training exercise held at the Queensland Combined Services Academy on Whyte Island near the port area. We were briefed and then made up with 'moulage' to depict various trauma wounds. The scenario was a collapsed building. Being able to take part in disaster training with other first responders builds both knowledge and camaraderie.
