NSW SES - Port Stephens Unit

The NSW SES is a volunteer-based emergency & rescue service dedicated to assisting the community. Prefer to chat in person? Drop in and say hi!

Situated in the beautiful Hunter Region, we have a very friendly and dedicated crew who thoroughly enjoy protecting, and engaging with, our local communities. Port Stephens SES is a specialist unit, who (in addition to storm & flood operations) also assist with:
- Road Crash Rescue (RCR)
- General Land Rescue (GLR)
- Urban Search & Rescue (USAR)
- Industrial & Domestic Rescue (IDR)
- Large Animal

Rescue (LAR)
- In-Water Flood Rescue

Here at Port Stephens SES, we are at unit Tuesday nights, 7:00-9:00pm. We are happy to assist with information and membership enquiries.

A big congratulations to our volunteers who dedicated their weekend to furthering their skills and gaining new qualifications.

Dean, Ross and Ewin successfully completed their Four Wheel Drive qualification alongside volunteers from our neighbouring units, NSW SES - City of Newcastle and NSW SES - Tomaree, while Liam and Andrew achieved their Large Animal Rescue Operations (LARO) qualification.

Our volunteers continually show up to train, develop their capabilities and ensure they are ready to support our community when needed most. Thank you for your commitment, dedication and willingness to keep learning.

Well done and congratulations to everyone involved!

Everyday, all over the world, first responders are out there getting the job done whether that is in a volunteer or paid capacity, they make a difference by serving their community.

**New Ranks Presented**

Last night, a number of our volunteers were presented with new ranks, recognising their dedication, experience, qualifications, and ongoing commitment to serving the Port Stephens community.

Rank progression within the NSW SES reflects the skills, knowledge, leadership, and experience gained through training, operational responses, and years of service. These achievements are a testament to the hard work and dedication our members continue to demonstrate.

Congratulations to all of our members who received new ranks. Your commitment to supporting our community during storms, floods, rescues, and other emergencies is greatly appreciated, and we thank you for everything you do.

The NSW SES advises people in the following area(s) to MONITOR CONDITIONS of the flooding on the Williams River:

- Clarence Town
- Seaham

You should monitor conditions by checking warnings issued by NSW SES on their website and page, listening to your local ABC radio station, and following the latest weather information from the Bureau of Meteorology online.

What are we expecting?

The Bureau of Meteorology advises rainfall has eased and no further significant rainfall is expected over the next few days. Flooding is no longer expected along the Williams River.

Based on predictions from the Bureau of Meteorology, the following areas may be impacted by floodwaters:

- Low lying areas adjacent to the river
- Low lying roads, bridges and causeways

🟡🟡 **FLOOD ADVICE – MINOR FLOODING WARNING IN PLACE** 🟡🟡

A flood warning for **minor flooding on the Williams and Paterson Rivers** is currently in place.

Our volunteers are currently responding to a number of storm and flood-related incidents across the Port Stephens area and are continuing to monitor conditions closely.

To assist the community in preparing for possible impacts, our **sandbagging point remains open** at:

Community members can attend to fill and collect sandbags where required to help protect their properties.

⚠️ **Stay informed and take precautions now.**

* Monitor weather conditions and warnings.
* Move vehicles and valuables to higher ground if required.
* Never drive, ride or walk through floodwater.

🟧 **SANDBAG POINT OPENING TODAY** 🟧

With wet weather impacting our area, a sandbagging point has been established at the Port Stephens SES Unit to assist members of the community in preparing their properties.

📍 31 Rees James Road, Raymond Terrace
🕤 Open from 9:30am today

Community members can fill their own sandbags to help protect their homes and businesses from potential flooding and water ingress.

Please drive safely when attending and follow the directions of our volunteers on site.

⚠️ An initial Flood Watch for the Hunter and parts of the Mid North Coast has been issued.

From overnight Thursday into Friday, minor flooding is possible along the Paterson and Williams Rivers.

Minor flooding is possible along the Manning and Gloucester, Goulburn and Hunter Rivers and Wollombi Brook from Friday.

🛑 Steer clear of floodwaters. If you come across a flooded road, turn around and find an alternative route.

🚙 Four Wheel Drive Course Success

Over the weekend, two of our members, Mick and Kalan, completed their Four Wheel Drive course and passed with flying colours 👏🟠

Throughout the course, they refreshed existing skills while learning new techniques that will help support operations in a range of environments. Training covered areas including driving on sand, vehicle recovery techniques and navigating challenging terrain — all important skills that help prepare our volunteers for responding when communities need assistance.

It’s great to see our members continuing to build their knowledge and confidence through ongoing training opportunities.

We’d also like to congratulate the members from NSW SES - Tomaree who successfully completed the course alongside them. Well done to everyone involved and thank you for your continued commitment to learning and supporting the community. 🚙

🧡 Today is Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW Day) 🧡

Today we recognise and thank the dedicated volunteers of the NSW State Emergency Service who support communities through storms, floods, rescues and other emergencies.

Wear Orange Wednesday is an opportunity to show appreciation for SES volunteers and acknowledge the countless hours spent training, responding to incidents and helping others when it matters most.

This year, WOW Day falls during National Volunteer Week, making it an important reminder of the incredible contribution volunteers make across our communities every day.

A special thank you to our unit members for your ongoing commitment to supporting the Port Stephens community. Whether responding to incidents, attending training, assisting behind the scenes or giving up time with family and work commitments — your dedication and willingness to help others does not go unnoticed.

We also extend our thanks to SES volunteers right across NSW for everything you do to help keep communities safe.
