Police District Overview

Command Overview: Port Stephens-Hunter Police District. PSHPD primarily services the LGAs of Maitland, Port Stephens and Dungog. We service a large area of approximately 3622 square kilometres and a population in excess of 164,000. Our goal is to continue to build the brand of Port Stephens-Hunter Police District in our community with a commitment to addressing crime, sup

porting our communities and developing our people. History:

Port Stephens-Hunter Police District commenced on 13 July, 2008, after the split of the former Lower Hunter Local Area Command into the Port Stephens and Central Hunter Commands. This development has provided the opportunity to deliver a more targeted policing approach to the area incorporating strategies specifically designed to meet local issues. The Worimi People were the original aboriginal inhabitants of the area. Local industries include oyster farming (2,000 ton p.a), commercial fishing (50 boats), rural produce and tourism. Geography:

The command comprises an area of 3694 square kilometres. It extends from coastal areas such as Nelson Bay and other towns situated on the Port Stephens estuary (166 sq km) through to urban centres such as Raymond Terrace and rural areas such as Dungog, Clarence Town and Stroud. The Pacific Highway is a major national highway that traverses the command north. Population:

§ 24 hour police stations at Raymond Terrace and Maitland (Dets, HWP & CPU) and Nelson Bay.

Almost one in seven drivers have returned positive drug tests following a traffic operation in the Port Stephens and Hunter Valley areas.

The high-visibility operation was established in response to high rates of fatal and serious injury crashes and anti-social driving behaviour.

As a result of the operation, 7,597 random breath tests were conducted, with 35 tests returning positive results.

A total of 649 drug tests were conducted, with 92 tests returning a positive result. Secondary tests were undertaken for all 92 drivers, and the samples have been sent for further analysis.

1,008 infringement notices were issued, three of those for speeds exceeding 45km/h.
