On 25 April 1916, Australians commemorated the first anniversary of the Landing at ANZAC Cove. Today the officers and soldiers of the 2nd/17th Battalion, the Royal New South Wales Regiment are humbled by those who sacrificed their all and those whose legacy we uphold. We are honoured by the friendship of those with whom we have served and the mates with whom we continue to serve.

ANZAC is not a place, or a battle. ANZAC is a group of people. We remember those who have gone before us and the mates with whom we serve. We acknowledge all of those who have served our country in theatres of war, in conflicts and peace making and peace keeping operations. There is no greater honour than to live your life in the service of others.

Lest We Forget.

Today as we stand to meet the dawn we recall the poem For the Fallen by Laurence Binyon, which today forms The Ode.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow,
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

During the recent School of Infantry Open Day, soldiers from Charlie Company 2/17 RNSWR undertook a demonstration of the Battalion’s Mortar Capability. The 81mm F2 mortar is a crew served, indirect fire support weapon designed to attack various threats to infantry units. The mortar is primarily man-portable but can also be deployed using helicopters, wheeled vehicles or armoured personnel carrier mortar vehicles.

Mortars can be fired in any direction by moving the bipod and rotating the barrel. Accuracy when employing mortars requires the mortar crews to be adept at calculating angles and ranges in order to adjust fire.

2/17 RNSWR deployed its Mortar Platoon to Townsville last week in support of the Army Mortar Concentration.

The activity hosted all Mortar Platoons within the Army.

It was an excellent opportunity for the Mortar Platoons within the 2nd Division to collaborate and develop the ARES capability.

In his address to the Battalion during the recent FPAT concentration RSM 2/17 RNSWR emphasised the significance of a maintaining a ready mindset and physical preparedness. Looking forward to a great year the RMS stressed the importance of both individual and collective skills and promised there would be plenty of training to develop both throughout the coming year.

The CO and RSM with the Command team are focussed on leadership through a focus on mission, outcomes and performance over appearance.
