🦔🚒 A Prickly Situation – Animal Rescue in Macquarie Park 🚒🦔

Whilst returning to station from a call, our crew were flagged down by members of the public in Macquarie Park who had narrowly avoided an echidna which then became stuck underneath their car.

Not one to shy away from a prickly situation, our firefighters got to work and were able to carefully coax the echidna out from under the vehicle before safely relocating it to nearby bushland.

The echidna was a little shaken, but otherwise unharmed — although one of our crew did suffer a small reminder of the encounter, with a spike to the finger!

A great outcome for one of our unique Australian native animals 🦔🇦🇺

Thanks to the members of the public who stopped and did the right thing by calling for help.

Fire and Rescue NSW extends its deepest condolences to everyone impacted by the terrorism attack in Bondi. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the wider community.

Gordon Fire Station serves a diverse community, including a significant Jewish population, and we understand that events like this can be particularly distressing. We want to reassure residents that we will continue to maintain a strong presence, remain vigilant, and work closely with our emergency service partners to support community safety.

If you have concerns or see anything suspicious, please report it to police. In an emergency, always call 000.

Our thoughts remain with all those affected.

🔥 Shift Update – B Platoon | Total Fire Ban Conditions 🔥

Today’s shift for Gordon Fire Station’s B Platoon has been an extremely busy one under high temperatures, extreme fire danger, and Total Fire Ban conditions — and we’re only halfway through.

So far today, crews have responded to:
• 🚨 Two automatic fire alarms this morning
• 🔥 A house fire in St Ives
• 🔋 A battery fire in Belrose
• 🌳 A tree down in Hornsby Heights
• 🏢 A second-alarm structure fire in Carlingford

Our firefighters continue to work hard in challenging and dangerous conditions to keep the community safe.

Today has also been overshadowed by the devastating Emergency Warning level bushfire at Koolewong on the Central Coast. Our thoughts are with all local residents affected, particularly those who have lost their homes, as well as our colleagues in Fire and Rescue NSW, the volunteers of the NSW Rural Fire Service, and all assisting emergency service personnel who have been working tirelessly on scene.

This is a painful reminder that summer is here and that severe and fast-moving fires can strike without warning.

📲 We strongly encourage everyone to download the Hazards Near Me App and set up Watch Zones for your home, workplace, and loved ones. This ensures you receive real-time alerts for dangerous incidents and guidance on what to do next.

Hazards Near Me can be downloaded from:

Thank you to the community for your continued support — and please stay safe in these extreme conditions.

🦉 Animal Rescue – Terrey Hills Golf Course 🦉

On Monday 10 November at around 7:20pm, Gordon Fire Station’s D Platoon was called to assist with an animal rescue at the Terrey Hills Golf Course.

A powerful owl had become entangled in the driving range netting, approximately 7–8 metres above the ground.

Crews secured one of our large ladders to the fence, allowing a firefighter to safely climb and attach themselves at the top, freeing both hands to work. With help from another firefighter supporting a cover over the owl’s head to keep it calm, the team carefully untangled the bird’s talons — one of which required cutting part of the net due to tight constriction.

Once freed, the owl was safely placed into a carrier bag and handed over to a Sydney Wildlife carer for assessment and rehabilitation.

We’re very happy to report that we recently received an update — the owl is recovering well and is expected to be released back into the wild later this week.

A great outcome for one of our local native residents! 🦉💚

🚨 Rescue Incident – Mona Vale Road, St Ives 🚨

This afternoon just before 2:45pm, Gordon Station was responded to a two-car collision on Mona Vale Road near the St Ives Showground.

Our crew worked quickly to free a 35-year-old male driver who was trapped in a grey Toyota Hilux that had rolled over. The patient was safely extricated and handed over to NSW Ambulance Paramedics, who treated him for head and possible spinal injuries before transporting him to Hospital in a stable condition.

Crews from NSW RFS Ku-ring-gai Brigade and NSW RFS - Terrey Hills Brigade also attended to assist with Fire Protection and clean up.

🚧 Traffic was heavily impacted in both directions, with westbound delays stretching back to Terry Hills and Belrose. The scene was cleared and the road reopened shortly before 4:30pm.

A prompt reminder to always stay safe on the roads, and slow down around accidents and emergency vehicles to ensure you don't become part of the emergency yourself.

Thank you to the community for your patience, and to all responding agencies for their professionalism and teamwork.

🚨 Suspicious Fire – Childcare Centre, Turramurra 🚨

At approximately 4:15am today, Gordon A Platoon was dispatched to a reported structure fire at a childcare centre on the Pacific Highway in Turramurra. Crews from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 050 Hornsby and Fire and Rescue NSW Station 058 Beecroft also responded to the incident.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the building's sprinkler system had successfully contained the blaze, resulting in minor damage. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have been deliberately lit, with reports indicating that accelerant was used throughout the premises. NSW Police Force have established a crime scene, and the incident is under active investigation.

We commend the swift response of all attending crews and the effectiveness of the building's fire safety systems.
