It's National Safe Boating Week. This week (and every week), a lifejacket could save your life, but only if you’re wearing it.

Before you head out:
🦺 Choose a lifejacket that suits your activity and fits properly
📏 Make sure it meets the relevant Australian standards
🛥️ Wear it every time you’re on the water
🔍 Check it regularly for signs of wear or damage

Wear it. Check it. Stay safe.

Heading into Port of Melbourne waters? Know the Transit Only Zone (TOZ).

A TOZ is a designated area around commercial shipping channels that is for transit only.

Small boat operators and paddlers must not anchor, drift, moor or fish within the TOZ.

The zone is marked by yellow special marks, and includes the Port Melbourne Channel south of Breakwater Pier, the Eastern and Western By-Pass Channels, and extends approximately 3 nautical miles south of Fawkner Beacon.

Knowing your boat is only half the job—you also need to know the waterway.

Local conditions can change from one location to the next, with different hazards, launching areas and boating rules.

Before every trip, check local requirements, carry the right navigational chart and seek local knowledge if you're boating somewhere new. The boating safety information sign (pictured) is a great place to start!

Calm at the shore doesn't always mean safe on the water.

Offshore winds can create deceptively calm conditions near the shoreline, while rougher seas and stronger winds develop further offshore. If you're blown away from land, getting back can become difficult or even impossible.

Before heading out:
• Check the latest weather and wind forecast
• Choose a location suited to the conditions
• Know your limits and the capabilities of your vessel
• Seek local knowledge if you're unfamiliar with the area

Plan ahead, understand the conditions and don't let calm water at the shore catch you out.

Fog can reduce visibility to just a few metres. Can other boaters see you?

When operating in fog, darkness or other conditions restricting visibility, you must use the correct navigation lights.

Navigation lights help other vessels identify your position and direction of travel, reducing the risk of a collision.

Before heading out on the water, ensure you:
âś” Check your navigation lights are working
âś” Make sure they're fitted correctly
âś” Turn them on whenever visibility is restricted
