Darebin Libraries

Darebin Libraries We are a public library service with four libraries across the City of Darebin. Our libraries are so much more than a place to browse and borrow.

We offer a welcoming space for study, learning, leisure and lounging. With a varied collection of resources, ever-expanding digital services and four library branches located at Fairfield, Northcote, Preston, and Reservoir, we're one of the most valued services within the City of Darebin. We have a large digital and physical collection of books, movies, music, audiobooks, newspapers and magazines

available for borrowing. These resources are available in English as well as in our community languages – Chinese, Vietnamese, Arabic, Italian, Spanish and Greek. Visit our resources in community languages to find out more. We're committed to making our resources and services accessible to all. Our Home library service, accessibility computers, talking books and large print books are just some of the ways we deliver on this commitment.

🌻Women’s Health Week (7 to 11 September) is approaching, and we couldn't help celebrating a little early this week at Reservoir Library with a Bollywood Dance Workshop! 👯💞 Award-winning dance theatre artist, Joshinder Chaggar, took us through the basics of Bollywood dance, beginning with gentle movement and gradually adding Bollywood steps. Our enthusiastic attendees raved about their experience! 🥰

This year’s Women's Health Week theme, do it anyway, is about taking small steps towards your health. Being active is not just for people who love the gym. It’s for everyone – in all bodies, at all life stages and in whatever form fits your day. So, even if you think you’ve got no rhythm, don’t own exercise clothes and feel intimidated by the phrase ‘working out’, we encourage you to take that step anyway! 😊

Meet Megan–Learning Together at Chess Club ♟️😊

Megan began attending chess sessions at Preston Library to support her son, who was eager to learn the game. At first, she just sat nearby, listening in to the rules and basic strategies. Megan has always loved board games, but chess felt intimidating—too complex, and not something she had the time to learn.

After a few visits, though, things began to click. She found herself picking up the rules just by listening. One day, a child from the group invited her to join a game. Slightly nervous but encouraged by the friendly environment, she gave it a go—and really enjoyed it. Since then, she’s been learning alongside her son, practicing moves at home and exploring beginner strategies.

What Megan appreciates most is the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere of the library. There’s no pressure to perform, and learners of all ages and skill levels are supported. The sessions are run by knowledgeable, passionate volunteers who make everyone feel included.

Come along to our next free chess club session!

Meet Bruce–Finding His Voice Through Conversation Café ☕😊

Bruce’s English language journey has been a challenging one—but thanks to Preston Library’s Conversation Café, it’s also been a rewarding and hopeful experience.

“Before studying at the library, I couldn’t understand even one sentence,” he says. “Now, I can talk to local people.”

Originally from China, Bruce struggled with remembering words and forming sentences in English. “It was immensely difficult,” he explains. “I often forget, so I need more practice.” That’s exactly what the library has provided: a welcoming space to listen, speak, and grow in confidence.

At Conversation Café, Bruce practices English with others who are also learning, alongside friendly locals and volunteers.

😊 We invite you to explore the many learning opportunities available at our libraries and other local learning providers, whether it’s coming along to an event or reading an inspiring learner story. And follow your compass! ✨
