June W**d of the Month: Groundsel bush

With its fluffy white flowers swaying in the breeze, this shrub, appearing in coastal pastures and riverbanks, may look like part of an idyllic country setting.

However, this bush is a silent invader capable of overtaking open land before you know it.

Head to our YouTube channel and join our Biosecurity Officer Matt Bell to learn more about this containment priority w**d: https://brnw.ch/21x3dRh

If you think you have Groundsel bush on your property, contact us for advice on identification and control, and refer to NSW W**dWise for further information.

🚧 Reminder: Hastings River Drive sewer upgrades begin Monday 15 June

From Monday 15 June to Monday 6 July 2026, the eastbound lane on Hastings River Drive between Clifton Drive and Bellbowrie Street will be closed while sewer upgrade works are carried out.

A temporary detour via Denham Street will be in place for the duration of the works.

The works will involve excavation to access existing sewer infrastructure beneath the roadway, allowing for the replacement of ageing assets and an increase in system capacity.

If you're travelling through the area, please allow extra time, follow onsite signage and take care.

We're advocating for the transport infrastructure our growing region needs 🚗

We have made a submission to the NSW Government’s Draft North Coast Strategic Regional Integrated Transport Plan, advocating for the projects and funding needed to support our growing community, improve road safety, strengthen disaster resilience and enhance connectivity across the region.

Our submission highlights several priorities, including:
• Upgrades to the Oxley Highway between Wrights and Lake roads
• Improved transport planning in growth areas and the Health and Education Precinct
• More resilient road networks and emergency access routes
• Better public transport connections
• Ongoing road maintenance and safety improvements
• Increased active transport opportunities

With our population expected to exceed 100,000 by 2035, it's important that transport infrastructure keeps pace with growth and supports the needs of our community now and into the future.

The Draft Plan is available for public feedback and the consultation period closes on Sunday 14 June 2026.

🚧 Kindee Bridge structural monitoring works

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
• Date: Tuesday 16 June
• Time: From 8.00am, weather permitting
• Bridge status: Open to traffic
• Traffic impacts: Stop/Go traffic control and short delays

As part of ongoing rehabilitation planning for Kindee Bridge, structural monitoring works will be undertaken on Tuesday 16 June from 8.00am.

The works involve the installation of a structural health monitoring system using a specialist rope access crew. Structural monitoring allows engineers to collect real-time information about how a bridge responds to traffic and environmental conditions.

The bridge will remain open during the works, however Stop/Go traffic control will be in place at both ends of the bridge and motorists may experience short delays of around 2-3 minutes.

The works are scheduled to be completed on the same day, subject to weather.

Please allow a little extra travel time on the day and follow the directions of traffic controllers.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we work through the investigations and planning required.

Artwalk Port Macquarie 2026 may be over, but we're still reflecting on what an incredible night it was.

As we celebrate 10 years of ArtWalk, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make ArtWalk 2026 such a memorable success.

To our artists, musicians, performers, creatives and cultural groups, thank you for sharing your talent, passion and creativity with our community.

Town Beach stabilisation works underway

Recent large swells and severe weather have caused erosion around the Town Beach, beach access and seawall area.

To help protect the site and keep the area safe for the community, Council will be undertaking stabilisation works from Wednesday 10 June to Friday 12 June (weather permitting).

🚧 Please stay clear of the work area and follow all signage and directions from onsite staff.

The works will focus on the most impacted section of the dune and beach access while Council continues planning for longer-term coastal protection measures.

We thank the community for their patience and cooperation while these important safety works are completed.

Pedestrian safety along one of Port Macquarie’s busiest roads has now been improved.

Construction of the new signalised pedestrian crossing on Hastings River Drive is now complete. The pedestrian-activated traffic lights were switched on last week, replacing the existing zebra crossing near Aston Street.

Upgraded street lighting, improvements to sections of the roadway near the signals, and new line marking and signage has also been installed.

Thank you to motorists for their patience whilst these important pedestrian safety improvements were completed.

This project has been jointly funded by the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program and Port Macquarie Hastings Council.
