SENIOR MUSIC CREW DELIVERS SHOWCASE PERFORMANCE...

Last Wednesday evening, a crew of four senior Music students performed their final Stage 2 Solo Performance pieces to an audience of family members, friends and PLHS staff.

Brayden Foote, Aidan McMillan, Sophie Flogdell and Cooper Hale treated the crowd to a mixture of tunes made famous by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tracy Chapman, Creedence Clearwater Revival and guitar pieces by Joe Satriani.

Thank you to Mr. Stephen Campbell and Mrs. Helen Marks for your ongoing support, both behind the scenes and on stage. Congratulations to Brayden, Aidan, Sophie and Cooper for showcasing your perseverance in addition to your musical skills.

~ Ms. Caitlin Randall (Music Teacher)

PLHS CHERRY BLOSSOM CURRENTLY IN BLOOM...

In 2022, to celebrate the first anniversary of the signing of our sister school agreement with Muroto High School, we planted a "sakura" (cherry blossom) in our Japanese garden adjacent to the school’s front office.

Several years later, we are delighted to report that the tree – a prunus Pink Cascade flowering cherry blossom – is thriving and currently in bloom. These wonderful images were captured earlier today by Year 11 Photography student, Cyrus Whetstone. Arigato, Cyrus-san.

PET LICENCE TOPIC FOR ROUND 1 DEBATING COMP…

“Should people require a licence to own a pet?”

This was the topic of contention battled out in Round 1 of the Regional Debating Competition convened by the South Australian Debating Association (SADA) on Wednesday September 23rd.

SADA’s Dinuk Rajapakse visited schools prior the competition to deliver an education session to both new and returning debaters. The teams were then able to apply their learning in this first round of competition.

Dinuk was joined by SADA adjudicators Isabella Teague and Isaac Jacobs to hear six overall debates on this topic. Reasons for the affirmative included the opportunity to prior educate pet owners with the aim of reducing animal cruelty, thus reducing the load of the overworked RSPCA; negative teams pointed out the heavy administrative load of this concept as well as the potential penalty felt by low socioeconomic families.

All debates were closely contested with a small number of points separating the winning and losing teams. PLHS Team 3 – consisting of new Year 7 debaters Ella Vonarx, Ranali Madiarachchige and Willow Spencer – recorded our first win of the year.

We were hugely impressed with the student’s courage, perseverance and willingness to support each other on the day. A special thank you goes to Dhanura Madiarachchige, who filled in with very little preparation.

We look forward to continuing our debating development in Round 2 early this term and will continue to welcome any new Year 7-9 faces to our team.

COLOURFUL FOOTY FUN TO FINISH TERM 3…

Ahead of today’s AFL Grand Final, our traditional Footy Colours Day again provided a fun finish to Term 3 yesterday; the festivities at PLHS included a sporting-themed casual clothes day, a longest kick competition and the undisputed highlight of the day, the annual Staff versus Students football match on the main oval.

Winners of the keenly contested recess time longest kick comp were:
• Year 11/12 Channel: Matilda Packer & Stirling Carter
• Year 9/10 Channel: Angus Rodda & Lucy Hatzimanolis
• Year 7/8 Channel: Estelle Dunn & Angas Stoakes

As usual, the prestigious staff vs. student matchup was very well organised and facilitated, played in wonderful spirit by all participants, and concluded with the correct result – another victory (4.3 to 0.4) to the mighty staff team (possibly assisted by the fact that the staff both umpire and score the game).

Congratulations went to the day’s two Best-on-Ground Medal recipients (pictured) – Isaac Sampson for the students and Ms. Jemma Joiner for the staff.

Following the game and presentations, all students and staff assembled across the Oval in their respective Dharna Crews for a final circle up discussion – each Crew shared their highlight for Term 3 and nominated something they were looking forward to in the school holidays. It was a fitting way to wrap up another wonderful term at PLHS.

Well done, Crew – all played well.

"GARDNI CONNECT" GIRLS GO TO GLEN FOREST...

On Wednesday, selected members of our "Gardni Connect" crew enjoyed an excursion to Glen Forest Tourist Park.

The event was a reward for girls in the program who throughout Term 3 had achieved at least 80% attendance, exhibited our three school values and were regular attenders at our their weekly Gardni Connect time.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS FOR TAILORED LEARNING STUDENTS…

It has been a great Term 3 for our Tailored Learning students at PLHS; through a Sport & Recreation program facilitated by West Coast Youth & Community Support, our students have enjoyed one-to-one 8-ball coaching at our local RSL club; this initiative has built upon our existing onsite program and strengthened links to Community Studies and Community Connections.

At our final session this week, students shared cakes and treats with their coaches and reflected on how much they had learned – from learning new competition rules to taking on our resident TL 8-ball champion, Quinn!

A fantastic term of learning, connection and friendly competition.

~ Mrs. Joh Walding (Assistant Principal: Tailored Learning)

* NOTE: All PLHS students have been sent a Daymap message inviting them to a come-and-try 8-ball session at the RSL in the upcoming school holidays (Thu Oct 8 // 10am~midday); this event is designed to encouraged young people to sign up for a new junior 8-ball league (teams of 4) to be run by West Coast Youth & Community Support on Thursday afternoons during Term 4.
