A young Elliston shorebird enthusiast is bringing her stunning shorebird artwork collection to Port Lincoln.

We’re proud to support Zephyr Jones with her ‘Share Our Shores’ exhibition that will be at the Nautilus Arts Centre from 21 October to 12 November.

The exhibition combines artwork and information, detailing the incredible lives of 16 migratory and 4 beach-nesting birds, aiming to raise awareness for the birds and raise funds to help protect shorebirds on Eyre Peninsula.

💬 Zephyr says: “Through my artwork, I hope to inspire people to care for shorebirds and be inspired to do as I do and observe and protect the shorebirds on this coast.”

📆 We’re also looking forward to seeing some of Zephyr’s artwork released in a calendar later this year, supported by our Grassroots Grants program.

Our Landscape Officers have started working with local Heritage Agreement landholders on grant applications for native vegetation conservation projects across the Eyre Peninsula.

Grants are for activities that improve biodiversity, including fencing, w**d and pest management and planting, and the program includes regional outreach, workshops and training to support landowners.

📷 A recent site visit to a heritage agreement near Kyancutta revealed a mallee ecosystem bursting with native grasses and wildflowers after above average rainfall. The landholder is seeking assistance to protect the high biodiversity area - which has malleefowl living within it - through fencing maintenance, biodiversity monitoring and feral predator control.

The first round of Heritage Agreement grants are open until December 7. See comments for links.

🌱 Last year’s sheoak tree plantings are looking amazing! We’ve been checking on sites around western EP and they are looking very healthy thanks to plenty of rain along with recent rabbit control and previous deer & goat control.

These trees form a key part of the critically endangered Drooping Sheoak Grassy Woodland on calcrete ecological community that used to be found on vast areas of EP, providing important habitat areas for local animals and plants 🐾🐦🌿

ℹ Our drooping sheoak recovery project is improving existing patches as well as increasing its distribution. Our five-year project is funded by the Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust and delivered by ourselves, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners Panel.

During the past few years, priority coastal campsites across Eyre Peninsula have undergone restoration works to help protect the local environment while also improving visitor experiences.

Works have focused on fencing, track rationalisation, revegetation and campsite management at council-run camping areas.

💬“The sustainable management of our coastal environment, especially in the face of climate change, is vital for the survival of threatened ecosystems and species, and in underpinning the growth of our regional communities, our economy, wellbeing and way of life,” says our Operations Manager Seb Drewer.

ℹ These works have been funded under the Eyes on Eyre initiative, a partnership between ourselves, Regional Development Australia Eyre Peninsula, the Eyre Peninsula Local Government Association and the Department for Environment and Water (Environment SA News) with funding from the Landscape Priorities Fund.

⛺The camping infrastructure project is now in the finishing stages, with a total of seven Eyre Peninsula councils accessing funding for local campsite improvements.

📷 Sites have included Frenchman’s, Talia Caves, Perlubie Beach and Greenly Beach.
