Keep an eye out for the last of our fledglings as they take flight. The wind is picking up and they are off on their first flight!

Our young fledglings will join with others from different colonies from the islands of Dean Maar, Bass straight, Phillip Island and Tasmania mainland mixing together as they fly over the waters of Bass straight, out into the open waters of the Pacific Ocean. Following their instincts on the trail of their parents.

Wondering what the fledglings of Griffiths Island have been getting up to?

Our volunteers have been out surveying mornings, evenings, late night and super early mornings...

Our largest count last week was 800 fledglings and our average evening count is 40-50. We expect the last group to depart this week! As the wind increases and weather shifts into a cooler pattern.

This fledgling found on a morning walk was returned to the safety of its burrow.

Watch out for our favourite fledglings.

We have a weather pattern of low northerly winds at the moment keeping the fledglings closer to home and reducing the opportunity for stronger SE or SE winds to help them off on their first flight.

You might see fledglings in the water, waterproofing their feathers and developing their ocean skills.

The shearwaters are stretching wings and moving about. All a natural part of their development as they prepare for their migration.

Switch off outside lights, look out on the roads and check under cars.

FoGI continues to monitor the colony during this sensitive time.

Busy burrows is what we like to see! Footprints around and fresh sand showing fledgling activity.
A shearwater burrow can be as long as 1 m and are carefully excavated as a nesting chamber (used year after year). The young chicks use the burrows as a safe place to hide during the day, waiting until it is time to take flight. Remember to Switch off for Shearwaters April 15 - 10 May.
