Meet Sleaford Bays Newest Residents! Or, have they always been there?…

Recreational drone hobbyist Ocean Apex Co has now catalogued a total of 7 different White Sharks within the Sleaford Bay area over the span of several months thanks@to his extensive drone monitoring of the bay. The findings bring a potential juvenile White Shark aggregation site into the spotlight. Juveniles are known to inhabit sheltered bays and coastal regions in their younger years, as they learn to hunt and seek protection from larger predators.

Since calling on Shark Watch SA to document his findings, drone pilot Hamish Fisher has become a major advocate of our work, helping to expand our aerial shark monitoring resources on the West Coast of SA, as we seek to discover more shark aggregation sites. His priceless photographs of different individuals will now be added to our repository of community sightings for future reference. Go, Hamish! 👏👏

🐳 Time of the Year 🙌

got prime spot to capture this Humpback frolicking off on Friday. By all reports, it enjoyed smashing Pilchards and throwing its weight around in the deep blue! It was tracked from Tapanappa to Boat Harbor Beach before it was last seen heading out to sea towards K.I.

Don’t forget to share your Whale sightings with Shark Watch, as well as the SA Whale Centre’s Sightings Log, this Winter! We’re now incorporating these beauties into our field of reporting and spreading the word of the latest SA sightings across our socials.

🛑 DELAYED REPORT ⚠️28/05/26 1130 - 1230 SHARK ALERT AT

4x juvenile White Sharks were spotted congregating over an expanse in Sleaford Bay between 600m East of Tinah Beach and Mary Ellis Wreck Beach. One of the sharks has been seen before and can be distinguished by a mark on the left side of the sharks body. Please spread the word and heed these warnings.

We thank the ongoing efforts of Hamish Fisher () who is helping Shark Watch SA build a virtual database of individuals inhabiting the Sleaford Bay area!

⚠️26/05/26 TAGGED WHITE SHARK DETECTED IN

Looks like tagged White Shark, “Dusty”, has been favouring the Port Lincoln township waters in Boston Bay and Proper Bay after making her arrival in April. Prior to that, the 3m sub-adult covered some serious ground, travelling more than 1,370km from the Great Australian Bite over 100 days of tracking! This highlights the incredible mobility of these unpredictable apex predators!

⚠️24/05/26 16:00, SHARK ALERT AT

A local surfer has contacted SWSA reporting a 2.5m shark, believed to be a Pointer, near a bait ball at Brown Bay on the Limestone Coast. According to the local, large schools of fish have been increasing shark activity, elevating risk at the popular swimming beach over the past couple of days. Swimmers and surfers are advised to take extra caution and avoid waters being inhabited by schooling fish and other prey species.

Here’s another great example of why citizen science matters! We like to call Shark Watch SA the states greatest “experiment” for investigating shark populations in South Australia thanks to the shear size of our following, and thanks to the ongoing commitment of drone enthusiast and Port Lincoln resident, Hamish Fisher (), and his generosity, we have been able to identify at least 4 individual White Sharks roaming around the vicinity of Sleaford Bay since the start of the year.

While a 6ft juvenile has been aerially monitored in the bay regularly since mid March, last week brought some major breakthroughs with another 3 sharks identified thanks to some extra high quality shots of the sharks body from Hamish and another recreational drone user. The photographs will now be lodged in our repository and be freely available for public viewing right across our socials!

The 4 individuals were described as follows:
🦈 1x juvenile at 2m named “Tina” after Tinah Beach.
🦈 1x juvenile slightly larger than 2m.
🦈🦈2x 3m sub-adults. One with a mark across the left side of its body and the other, plain.

Thanks to Hamish devoting his spare time to monitor the bay, we are now gathering incredible insights into shark activity in the Sleaford Bay region along with other marine life occupying the bay. Well done to all our ambassadors around SA!
