We need more advocacy for funding for our local Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades, and it is great that WALGA is advocating for this.
Our shire is predominantly almost 90% rural, and with 5 brigades spread over 1700 square kilometres, firefighting capabilities are absolutely vital.

The Western Australian Local Government Association celebrates and acknowledges Local Government Volunteer Bushfire Brigades and the critical role they play in protecting communities across WA during bushfires – as the backbone of WA’s fire response capability.

WALGA President Karen Chappel AM JP recently spoke to the ABC regarding the impact that pole-top fires have on VBFBs.

WALGA’s 2026-27 State Budget Submission calls for additional funding to ensure volunteers are equipped with all the necessary tools to safely and effectively protect WA communities.

What do you think about these new laws?

Following ongoing advocacy, WALGA welcomes the State Government’s intent to introduce the Cat Amendment (Local Laws) Bill, giving Local Governments the power to respond to their own communities' needs regarding cat containment.

“WA has needed clear direction and legislative changes to ensure Local Governments can implement effective Cat Local Laws, and we acknowledge the State Government's commitment and engagement with the sector," WALGA President Karen Chappel AM JP said.

Recognising the nations National Servicemen. During uncertain times these men served with honour and valour, and their sacrifice should never be forgotten.

National Servicemen's Day (1951 - 1972)

Today we recognise the many Australians who served under the National Service Scheme.

Between 1951 and 1972, thousands of young Australian men answered their nation's call to compulsory military service during times of uncertainty and conflict. These national servicemen, known as "Nashos", served with courage and dedication in Vietnam, Malaysia, Borneo, and Papua New Guinea.

Their service came at a profound cost. During the Vietnam War alone, more than 200 national servicemen made the ultimate sacrifice, and over 1,200 were wounded in active service. These young Australians, many barely out of their teens, faced the reality of war not by choice, but by duty.

Today we honour their service, their sacrifice, and their unwavering commitment to our nation. We remember those who didn't come home, those who returned forever changed, and all who carried the weight of service throughout their lives.

To all national servicemen and their families, thank you. Your contribution to our nation will never be forgotten.

Lest we forget.

David Bolt MLA ‘s recent community forum in South Yunderup was clear that improving road access, upgrading the South Yunderup Bridge, and keeping local facilities in good condition are important priorities for the community.
The Shire of Murray included their informative briefing on strategic priorities for the region, Wolfdene then provided an update on their development and community facilities, and the Yunderup Sport & Recreation Club (inc) included their presentation of their venue.
We have a thriving ever changing community in South Yunderup, full of great people and a tremendous community spirit.
