While it's an act I find contemptible, the US supreme court has dealt with this question in Texas v Johnson and reached the opposite conclusion.

Burning a flag is obviously capable of communicating a political message. You don't have to like the message for it to be speech. In fact, free speech matters most precisely when you despise the message being expressed.

Justice Brennan “If there is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment, it is that the Government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable.”

I love the Australian flag. I think burning it is disgusting. But that's exactly why defending someone's right to burn it means something.

If we only protect expression we approve of, we don't have freedom of speech. We have government-approved speech.

“We do not consecrate the flag by punishing its desecration, for in doing so we dilute the freedom that this cherished emblem represents.”

You’re not exercising free speech when you burn a flag.

Free speech should be constitutionally protected, and the best living example is the US first amendment.

The US has plenty of problems, but protecting the right to speak isn't one of them.

Australians deserve a Bill of Rights, and Free speech should be at the top of it, protected by five simple words - "Parliament shall make no law."

"...the Welsh Parliament passed a landmark law on March 17, 2026, that introduces a recall system and sets up a legal path to punish candidates who tell deliberate lies during campaigns."

Unbelievable.
Let's get that here!

Albo just landed in Perth and where did he go?
He didn't go to Secret Harbour to help out with the election.
He went straight to millionaire row where people paid $10,000 a head to sit down and have dinner with him.
$10,000 just to have dinner with Albo!? What do you think they talked about?

While citizens should have the right to free speech (and it should be enshrined in the constitution) politicians and government officials should not hold the same free speech protections in the course of their duties.
I see no reason why politicians shouldn't be held accountable for knowingly lying to the public (distinct from unknowingly making false claims (ignorance)).

Should West Australians adopt 'Castle Law' to prevent criminals from stealing their cars?Yes.

Should West Australians adopt 'Castle Law' to prevent criminals from stealing their cars?

Yes.

This is awful, a travesty.

The carjacker should have been shot dead before they could even get behind the wheel of the first car they stole, let alone the second.

Think I'm being heartless? This particular cautionary tale injured and COULD have killed another innocent road user because our 'compassionate' laws disarmed his victims and ensured he got behind the wheel 'safely'.

He drove wildly down the wrong side of the road, crashed, got into another car when the driver got out (presumably to help with the crash) and drove wildly again, having a head on with such force that he was thrown clean out of the car and died. So at least theres a happy ending but he was permitted to endanger FAR more people than he should have had the opportunity to do.

Ending criminals mid-crime is infinitely more compassionate than allowing their crime spree to continue will ever be.
