I always apologise to Pretty Boy,
for not being able to give him as much attention as he deserves.

Thankfully he now has Charlie and Simon to keep him company,
But they don’t bring the music, or tap out a beat for him.

He’s a headbanger 🤘

I threw these branches at my gate for the feral’s, and someone else was helping themselves when I came back.

He’s got a baby to raise, but there’s enough food in the local trees.

It was a very wet and windy Sunday in the south west, I hope all the birds hung on safely through it like this fledgling.

I’ve spent years looking for food sources to teach rescued fledglings and juveniles how to best use the beak and tongue to feed themselves.

I think this ones parents must remember that, so leave it lingering above me, while they go off feeding.

One of our young visitors brought her own pink cockatoo along for the Mother’s Day tour weekend.

Muffy wasn’t too sure about it.

Muffy Moo the pink cockatoo loves our jarrah too…

It’s fu**ed that we’re still cutting it down and not replacing it 🤬🤬

The next flock of birds to be released

Learning how to forage amongst the leaves again

Remembering how to land on swaying branches

Reprogramming the legs how to walk amongst the limbs again after so long on stationary perches

Large branches like we collected last Sunday are perfect for conditioning them for being wild again in their final stage of release.

Plus all the nuts condition and strengthens their beaks

Helping a friend clean up and I found a pair of velvet geckos

To save them from a hungry bird, I caught them and moved them to a new home under an old tractor

While giving the jarrah to my neighbours, I heard the older of our released redtail’s fledglings at the water bowl on the carnaby’s roof.

I know it’s the older fledgling, as the others beak’s is dark like a males.

I put some jarrah on the roof to see if it’s learnt from mum and dad.

It may have, but from collecting nuts for fledglings rescued over the years, they appear to have a natural instinct for what to eat.

Thank you to Sam’s contact at Main Roads, for letting him know they were clearing for an another overtaking lane on Albany Highway. It’s one of those black spots where impatient idiots with a death wish try to overtake though it’s not legal to, and people have died. It’ll make the road safer.

Sam and I both took a ute with a trailer, both had a hand held electric chainsaw saw, and loaded one trailer with 20+ 4 metre jarrah perches. The ute’s and other trailer were loaded with branches full of jarrah and marri nuts. Sam was there Saturday night, via an extended detour on his way home from Kaarakin, and brought a car load of jarrah nuts this morning.

He works like a machine Sam. I think he might be part cyborg to go so hard.

All the birds onsite appreciated his efforts, as he gave some the nuts he collected last night, and I gave the rest what we collected today, when we arrived back, while Sam did a tour.

Unfortunately the freshest trees were where the road was cut through a hill, so there was a bit of extra work involved climbing up the embankment, and sliding everything down. The trees were pilled up to 3-4 metres high, so thankfully we were both sure footed and didn’t slip climbing over it.

It quieted my feral red flock neighbours ❤️🖤

That’s going to be a whole lot of work to look after…

Hooray for the new tail.
