Australians share common core values, which whilst not unique to Australia, are expressed in our own unique way. Drawing on colloquialisms, our values include such things as being ‘fair dinkum’, and the value of a ‘fair go for all’. Our society’s values are based on our Judeo-Christian heritage, which are ultimately outlined within the Bible. We are unapologetic about basing our policies, and core values upon this, our heritage. Phase 2 reforms to Working with Children Checks have been waiting for action for more than a year.

The Government says the Department of Communities is working towards a package of reforms.

Yet when we asked whether these will be forthcoming before the end of the year, we received another non answer.

These are not highly technical questions, we simply want a reasonable timeline and for the government to be upfront about how they are prioritising child protection!

Parents, carers, schools and community groups need certainty.

Australian Christians have been talking about these issues and raising awareness about them for many years! We take children’s safety seriously and we desperately need clear action, not more vague assurances.

We're happy to share this reflection by Maryka Groenewald MLC for Western Australia about Child Protection Week.

Child Protection Week is a reminder that protecting vulnerable children must be more than a slogan. Across Western Australia, more than 5,200 children are living in out-of-home care. Dedicated carers, frontline workers and families carry an enormous responsibility, yet they need a system that supports them with clear processes, timely action and real accountability.

Children need to know the adults and institutions responsible for their safety will listen and act. Australian Christians will continue standing for a child protection system that delivers answers, accountability and meaningful action.

Father’s Day is an opportunity to honour the men who faithfully serve their families. Fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers and father figures carry immense responsibility. They give their time, provide for their households, offer wisdom when it is needed, and stand beside their children through every season of life.

Strong fathers help build strong families. Their love, guidance and example give children security, shape their character and strengthen the next generation. Today, we thank the men across Western Australia who continue to show up, work hard and lead their families with courage and care

Providing more in-home palliative care for West Australians who need it must be a top priority. For many people in their final days, being at home means greater dignity, comfort and connection with the people they love. Evidence also shows that home and community-based palliative care can reduce unnecessary hospitalisations and improve satisfaction for patients, families and carers.

Australian Christians cares deeply about ensuring that people can receive pain relief, comfort and support as they live out their final days. We will keep fighting, in and outside Parliament, for stronger palliative care services that give every West Australian the care, dignity and companionship they deserve.

Today is Australian National Flag Day. On 3 September 1901, Australia’s new flag was first flown above Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building after a national design competition launched by Prime Minister Edmund Barton. This year marks 125 years since that historic moment.

Our flag represents our shared history and the sacrifices of generations of Australians who built and defended the nation we are privileged to call home.

Maryka Groenewald MLC for Western Australia supported a disallowance over a proposed major development at North Ellenbrook West, citing concerns for potential dangers for local residents. Before another large development proceeds, we must learn from the serious drainage failures already affecting families, farms and businesses in Dayton and the Swan Valley. No one is against housing - we need it - but there are still massive concerns about the flooding in the area!

She shared the heartbreaking experience of Marija and Philipp, whose farm and weekend market have deteriorated as rising groundwater has damaged sheds and equipment, affected livestock and left them unable to properly plant, harvest or use their land. Australian Christians believes development must never come at the expense of ordinary families, and that quick approvals should never be an excuse for poor planning.

We strongly support the Government’s legislation to close loopholes in WA’s Working with Children Check system. The reforms will help ensure that a person who loses their clearance in another state cannot simply obtain a new one in WA. But as Maryka Groenewald MLC for Western Australia rightly pointed out, it has taken way too long for WA to act, while almost every other state had already moved to pass similar reforms.

Australian Christians believes protecting children is one of Parliament’s most important duties. When known gaps exist in systems designed to keep children safe, governments must act urgently, not wait until the final months of the year to begin debate. We will keep pushing for strong, practical safeguards that put children first.

Miracle in name, miracle in action. Makarita Miracle Tanuvasa is believed to be Australia’s youngest-ever premature baby to survive. Born at just 21 weeks and three days, weighing only 351 grams, she is also believed to be the smallest baby ever born in Queensland.

Her story is a powerful reminder of what modern neonatal medicine can do. Medical technology is improving every day, making it possible to care for babies outside the womb at stages of pregnancy that would once have made survival impossible. We can save these babies. We have the capability. What we need, as a society, is the will to protect every precious life.
