The SWORD crews are lacing up and taking on the tower once again — not just for the challenge, but for something far bigger than ourselves.

We’re incredibly proud of our Fire Fighters who spent this week in South Australia, lending their expertise and courage to support the firefighting efforts there. It’s inspiring to see SWORD VFES represented on the national stage, standing shoulder to shoulder with our fellow firefighters across the country.
A huge thank you to Ken and Cloggy for your dedication and for making us all proud. Your commitment truly shows what it means to be part of this amazing team! 👨‍🚒🔥👏

ROB’S LONG WALK HOME

Because everyone’s journey is different
4 million steps across Australia for Neuromuscular WA

On April 19, SWORD's very own Senior Fire Fighter and Treasurer Rob Storey will lace up his shoes, take a deep breath and begin walking across Australia, from Melbourne to Perth.

That’s 3,400km, 75 - 80 walking days and around 4 million steps (HOLY SH*T). No shortcuts. No moving walkways. Just Rob, the open road and a very well-worn pair of shoes.

Why? Because for Rob, this isn’t “just a walk”.

After more than 20 years of involvement with Neuromuscular WA, including serving on the Board since 2006, this challenge is his way of giving back - step by step, blister by blister - to support people living with neuromuscular conditions.

THE WALK AT A GLANCE
🥾 Melbourne to Perth (yes, really)
👣 4 million steps
🚶 40 - 50km a day
🗓️ April 19 - home by July 9
🎯 Fundraising goal: $34,000 ($10 for every kilometre walked)

Your donation helps Neuromuscular WA continue to provide:
- Support and connection for individuals living with neuromuscular conditions
- Programs that reduce isolation and improve wellbeing
- Advocacy and guidance for families navigating complex care systems

You don’t have to walk across Australia to make a difference. You can help by:
- Donating to support Rob’s journey
- Sharing his story with your network
- Cheering him on from somewhere far more comfortable

We told you what our crews did. Now see what they faced.

The Boddington fire was driven by erratic, fast changing weather. The kind even long serving volunteers rarely encounter.

This is why bushfire plans matter. Check yours. Stay informed to stay safe at https://www.emergency.wa.gov.au

Early on New Year’s Day, SWORD members responded to an emergency incident unfolding in Kalamunda threatening life and homes, providing critical asset defence alongside local brigades. A full second shift then took over, supporting mop-up and patrol operations to keep the community safe.

A big shoutout to our Apparatus Officer and District Officer who had a standby appliance ready at short notice (an impressive 2 hour turnaround!) after one of our 3.4 appliances broke down, keeping us on the road and operational during this high threat period.

Just two days later, members responded to a 3 am Saturday call out to the Koongamia incident to support further asset defence for our local community.

Early mornings, long shifts, no hesitation. This is volunteer commitment at its best, and we wouldn’t have it any other way in 2026. Thank you team!

From early morning Christmas Day through to late New Year’s Eve, SWORD was supporting fire fighting operations at the Boddington incident in challenging conditions, sacrificing time that would otherwise have been spent with loved ones during the Christmas and New Year period.

36 volunteers attended the incident across five shifts, each lasting 12+ hours on the fireground, contributing to a wide range of critical tasks including asset defence, machine supervision, bush and grass fire suppression, mop-up and patrols. We even found time to share some home made Christmas treats with the wonderful Salvation Army crew!

SWORD continued its support with a 3 day taskforce deployment through to NYE with an additional 4 members and our District Officer in attendance.

Their willingness to step forward during this time is a powerful reflection of the dedication, resilience and selflessness that defines our brigade.

A sincere thank you to every member who contributed, your efforts played a vital role in protecting the community and supporting the broader firefighting response. Your service does not go unnoticed.
