80 elections and counting!
As a Presiding Officer for the Secret Harbour by-election, Ross Baker is putting his extensive election experience to work with the WAEC.
Since starting as a polling official at 17, Ross has worked at more than 80 elections across Australia, building a reputation for professionalism, accuracy and a commitment to ensuring every vote counts.
“I love elections, I love numbers, I love balancing data, and I love a challenge. Every election is different and brings its own set of unique challenges.” Ross said, reflecting on what has kept him involved in elections for more than 50 years.
Elections are a family affair for Ross. He first worked alongside his father, later with his wife Cheryl (pictured), and now two of their daughters are part of the electoral workforce.
One election Ross will never forget was a by-election in Orange, New South Wales. After a seat that had been held for decades changed hands, the result came down to just 50 votes out of 50,000 cast. Multiple recounts produced the same result, highlighting the importance of accuracy and the impact every vote can have.
