Why we love apprenticeships and traineeships!

Apprenticeships and traineeships are the best way for vocational training to be delivered! Firstly, they give people a job and the chance to earn while they learn, build practical skills in a real workplace and work towards a nationally recognised qualification at the same time.

One of the biggest advantages of an apprentice or trainee is that they are not just sitting in a classroom learning the theory. They are also learning on the job, working with experienced people and developing the skills employers are looking for.

For employers, taking on an apprentice is not just about filling a vacancy. It is an opportunity to develop someone to suit the needs of your business. An apprentice or trainee learns your systems, your customers, your equipment and the way your workplace operates. Over time, they can become a valuable part of the team.

Regional communities across Western Australia are being encouraged to dig through their sheds, wardrobes and work lockers as part of a new campaign helping shearing industry workers build extra local work opportunities beyond the wool shed in quieter periods of the shearing off-season.

Give your spare work gear a second life. 🥾

Do you have quality workwear or boots sitting unused at home? Don’t leave them lying around, pass them on and help WA shearing workers arrive at training job-ready, confident and equipped from day one.

Beyond The Shed is a program providing WA shearing teams with training to expand their skills beyond the shearing shed and increase their work opportunities outside of the shearing season.

We are collecting safe, wearable work boots; long-sleeve collared work shirts; work pants or jeans; and high-vis shirts or vests. Items should be in good, wearable condition and suitable for a working environment.

Thank you to all who contributed to our recent Equine Skills Network Meeting. As Alex-Kate mentions below, the main objective of meetings like this is to learn from stakeholders about the issues that are impacting their industries.

It's not surprising that many of the issues are common to all of our industries - attracting and retaining skilled workers, having access to career pathways with relevant training programs.

Because of this, it enables us to provide government with current information about these priorities and hopefully influence sound policy and funding decisions.

Again, thank you to all who contributed. It was a very successful meeting.

While I serve on the FFTITC Food, Fibre & Timber Industries Training Council (WA) Inc Board representing the Animal Care and Management and Poultry sectors, one of the most valuable aspects of these industry forums is the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with stakeholders across a diverse range of industries.

The discussions highlighted many of the workforce challenges we share across animal industries, including attracting and retaining skilled workers, creating meaningful career pathways, ensuring training remains relevant, and supporting industry growth through effective education and workforce development initiatives.

It was also valuable to hear from Skills Insight regarding the broader national training landscape, current qualification reviews, workforce planning initiatives, and the important role industry plays in shaping future training products and workforce priorities.

Although equine, poultry and animal care sectors have unique needs, the conversations reinforced that many of our workforce challenges are shared. By working together across industries, we have a better opportunity to develop training solutions that support a skilled, capable and future-ready workforce.
