For those who voted for me, thank you, I gave it a really good crack this time round, but with only 143 first preference votes, and at the bottom of the ladder I’m about to be knocked out, and it’s evident that I’m not what Bunburys looking for in a councillor.
It’s a shame as I was really hoping to bring different perspectives to the council.
Oh well, onto other endeavours….

Ever wonder how your vote is counted? Here is my quick 5-minute lesson on how the preferential voting system works.

Less then 19% of people have returned there vote! We can do better!!

A big part of what I’m trying to do by becoming a councillor is educating the public, here is my first video to start the process…

So if you haven’t already heard, in a world first, South Australia has banned all political donations, of any kind!

Why is that relevant to our local elections currently taking place? Well, why I can’t say with any certainty that some of our candidates are being externally funded, looking cost associated with the amount advertising that some candidates have spent, I wouldn’t be a surprised if they were.

Let me elaborate.

I looked into having a flyer dropped to every letterbox in Bunbury, but at 19,000 printing my simple 3rd of a A4 page, black and white version, would of come to minimum $2000, (and some candidates have done double sided full colour and three folds, you can quadruple that figure), plus $5500 via auspost delivery, thats $7500 with most of them never being read, or not being delivered because of “no junk mail” on the letterbox…

(I couldn’t afford that, so I delivered my 3000 flyers, by hand on a bike, and it still cost me $400, and I’m a lot fitter this week then I was last week hahah)

Then there is newspaper adverts, I also looked into this, but couldn’t justify the $300 each edition for a 1/8 page advert, (I’ve seen some candidate’s in every paper advert 1/4 of a page for the last 5 weeks..)

Placards, min $20 each, I’ve done a few, but I’ve seen some candidates have 20-30 up around town)

Facebook campaigns to reach everyone in Bunbury, that’s $19 a day, for each ad, so another $200 for a couple of weeks. (Some candidates are running multiple ads at the moment)

Looking at some candidates, it’s fair to say they would have easily spent, at a minimum, $15,000 on there campaigns….

If you extrapolate that to a state or federal level, it could quickly translate into millions of dollars

There are many people, such as myself, that have fresh ideas, the energy, the drive, and really want to make a change, but like me, are also supporting families and paying bills that have all gone through the roof in recent times.

How are we meant to compete?

The South Australia elections in March are going to be really interesting to see unfold 🙂

Technology is moving at an unprecedented rate, we need to ensure we are keeping pace and whatever we do now, to our best ability, can be somewhat future proofed..

If you still haven’t decided on who to give your vote to, here are a few more of my opinions on current topics, based on the responses I gave to the Dardanup Observers questions sent out to all candidates 🙂

📨 Candidate Response: Daniel Singleton

The Dardanup Observer has begun receiving responses from Bunbury City Council candidates. Today we share the answers from Daniel Singleton, Director and business owner.

On transparency, Singleton proposes using digital billboards around town to list agendas a week in advance, so residents can lodge questions before, not after, decisions are made.

On budgets, he suggests introducing incentive-based pay structures for those drafting budgets: if expenses blow out, their pay shrinks; if savings are found, they benefit too.

On planning, Singleton argues Bunbury must “start going up,” with multi-storey buildings that mix retail, parking, and residential space to grow the rate base.

On waste and FOGO, he says it must be a multi-council/state-funded operation, and believes recycling, done properly, can be profitable.

On homelessness, Singleton points out that it’s a state responsibility but a local burden. He proposes a South West community hub with short-term accommodation, practical amenities, and council-supported work programs in gardening, landscaping, and waste management to give people a path back on their feet.

On unfinished projects, his answer was blunt: “Bureaucracy, bureaucracy, bureaucracy.” He argues that red tape drags things out, with state election deadlines often deciding which projects get fast-tracked.

On conflicts of interest, Singleton declared none.

Finally, his closing note to voters: “Regardless if you vote for me, please return your vote.”

If you happen to find a flyer in your mailbox, it's one of the thousands that I have personally delivered around town... and I'm still at it!!

So postal votes should land in your mailboxes throughout the week.
And past statistics tell us only 1 out of 3 will actually returned, and majority of them within 5 days.
What does this translate into? Expect to be bombarded with all of us candidates trying to, in the shortest and most impactful way, convince you that “your vote is best place with me”
As a really good insight into where I stand, I did an interview today with Paul van der Mey, who runs Forrest chat, a podcast for all things in the greater Forrest electorate area.

I have many fond memories of the rink, both from its original days on Zaknic pl and its now location in the Halifax industrial area.

It is a great space, and my heart sunk when I heard the news that it was folding up.
While being a great activity for families and great date night activity, It also quietly pumps out state, national and international champion skaters!

Thankfully it found new owners who have taken to the tools and it’s undergone a refurb!!

It was moments away from being another statistic, so if you have never been, why not head down and support a great business!
