Victoria’s award winning wildlife park, Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park invites you to wander through 10 hectares of bushland, meeting endangered species, feeding kangaroos and wallabies, cuddling koalas and enjoying encounters with colourful birds, reptiles, dingoes and many other animals. At night, Moonlit Sanctuary comes alive with world-famous lantern-lit tours. Night birds are active, tiny feathertail gliders and giant yellow-bellied gliders swoop around, and endangered quolls, pademelons and bettongs forage for food.

Whilst rufous bettongs are traditionally known for eating truffle-like fungi, they are also happy to snack on invertebrates when given the opportunity.

Congratulations to the San Francisco 49ers on their big win in Melbourne today! 🏈🇦🇺

It’s been fantastic having so many US sports news teams visit Moonlit Sanctuary this week, helping us show off some of Australia’s amazing wildlife to football fans in the States.

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by — we loved sharing a little bit of Aussie wildlife with you!

Our free flight birds know that the Show Arena is the place to be because that's where their favourite humans are waiting for them with their favourite snacks. However, there's nothing stopping the birds from taking a little detour, so what happens if they decide to go on an adventure?

Before coming out for their free flight session, our birds allow their trainers to clip a small, lightweight tracker to an anklet, which transmits a radio signal to a receiver. Most of the time if a bird leaves the arena they won't stray too far, however it's vital that keepers are prepared for a scenario where a bird ventures beyond the park itself.

Keeper James has been helping the show team practice their telemetry skills so that in the event of an unexpected free flight expedition, they're able to confidently follow their feathered friend. Percival the leopard plushy was equipped with a transmitter and hidden somewhere offsite by James, who then returned to Moonlit and jumped behind the wheel to act as chauffeur so the trackers could concentrate on using the telemetry equipment (safety first!).

Keepers gained valuable experience using the omni-aerial; a special 360 degree antennae that magnetises to the roof of the car. Rather than needing to be pointed towards the bird like the hand receiver, the omni-aerial receives signal from all directions and is invaluable for finding a bird that's flown out of sight.

We're pleased to report that everybody was successful at relocating Percival the leopard plushy, who is now enjoying a comfortable "free-flight" retirement 🏆🪶

Today is Threatened Species Day – and what better day to announce a new opportunity to join our conservation team?
We’re looking for a Threatened Species Coordinator to help advance Moonlit Sanctuary’s mission to save species from extinction.

This full-time role will help coordinate our threatened species programs, including our work with the critically endangered Orange-bellied Parrot, with a strong focus on population management, conservation planning, data and reporting.
If you’re an experienced conservation professional who wants to make a meaningful contribution to the future of Australia’s threatened wildlife, we’d love to hear from you.

Today marks 90 years since the thylacine, also known as the Tasmanian tiger, went extinct in 1936. The species has become a symbol for all of the native plant and animal species that are threatened with the same fate. In 1996, 60 years after the loss of the thylacine, Threatened Species Day was created to not only memorialise this loss, but also highlight the species that still need our help.

Moonlit Sanctuary is dedicated to the long-term conservation of our native wildlife, with core goals of not only protecting Australian fauna but also educating visitors about our endangered species and their conservation. By fostering love for our wildlife, we can inspire new mindsets and encourage simple choices that make major impacts for the species that need it the most. By visiting Moonlit Sanctuary, you are already helping to make a difference by supporting us and all of our conservation work.

🎉 Happy Hatchday Micah and Obsidian 🎉

We're wishing a very happy 1st hatchday to our two Conservation in Action Show curlews! Obsidian and Micah are a brother and sister bush stone-curlew duo that hatched at Moonlit Sanctuary last year and have been taking the stage by storm since they were just chicks. Turning the arena into a catwalk, these two use their long legs to strut their stuff and create conversation about their species, which are classified as critically endangered here in Victoria.

Growling grass frogs were once common in South-East Australia; however they're now classified as Vulnerable in Victoria. Although shy and sometimes challenging to spot, you might have been lucky enough to hear the call of these rare frogs without even knowing it. Their call sounds like a motorbike revving in the distance, and could easily be ignored. However, if you live in Victoria, there's a way to know whether what you've heard is actually the real deal!

When you record and submit potential frog calls through the Melbourne Water Frog Census App, a frog ecologist will listen to verify and you'll receive a notification if they confirm that you have in fact recorded a growler. How cool is that?! In addition, this provides valuable data on the location of growlers and other frog species 🐸

Buckle up for National Biodiversity Month! 🌏

At Moonlit Sanctuary we want to provide an opportunity for visitors to create connections with our unique Australian wildlife and help inspire conservation mindsets, which is exactly what National Biodiversity Month is all about!

There are almost 600,000 species native to Australia, and many of them can't be found anywhere else. Everyone has a role to play in the ecosystem, and this month we'll be sharing all the simple and easy ways we can have a positive impact on the world around us to ensure we're protecting the natural beauty of our environment 💚

Pebbles the Southern hairy-nosed wombat has settled into her new home at here at the Sanctuary wonderfully, and is loving all the perks that come with being a Moonlit wombat. Investigating enrichment and supervising keepers while they tidy her room and make her bed are some of her favourite hobbies, but the best time of day is training time!

Through positive reinforcement based training, we can teach our animals skills that allow them to voluntarily participate in their own care, giving them choice and control over their day. Despite only just starting her training journey, Pebbles has already mastered many of the basic behaviours needed to make health checks a stress-free process! Pebbles will happily step onto scales for her weigh-in, and allows keepers to check inside her ears, touch her tummy, and even gently lift her legs to check her feet, toes, and nails. She also loves her transport crate, immediately heading inside and getting comfortable while she's chauffered to her destination 🚕

With the recent arrival of our new koala friends, Olive and Delilah, the koala team is busier than ever ensuring they've got the best food available for our growing koala family. By partnering with local landholders, we can provide our koalas with fresh, high quality eucalyptus browse that's been harvested sustainably in order to support overall tree health and encourage future growth. Thank you to everyone that has already responded to our last post; we couldn't do this without you!

We're still seeking long-term browse partners, so if you have a property within approximately 40km of Moonlit Sanctuary with established eucalyptus trees, we'd love to hear from you!
We’re looking for suitable eucalyptus species including Manna Gum, Swamp Gum, River Red Gum, Blue Gum, Peppermint Gum and Bushy Yate.
