Last Friday afternoon, OTH CFS chainsaw qualified firefighters conducted their annual Skills Maintenance Drill (SMD). A local resident and Captain of the Brigade, had the perfect training aid, a dead and privately felled tree in their front yard.

This opportunity provided timely and valuable training for chainsaw qualified firefighters. This type of training is vital to improving and maintaining skillsets across the brigade. It also allows more experienced firefighters to pass on their knowledge and raise the overall proficiency of the brigade ahead of potential callouts during wild or severe weather conditions.

During our recent community Thank you afternoon, some community members asked what do we do when its not Fire Danger Season, Training and upskilling, among other things.

Firefighters Quinn and Tom completed the Breathing Apparatus course at the CFS State Training Centre at Brukunga last weekend.

The course is an intensive two day course, putting firefighters through rigorous training scenarios to qualify as BA operators.

Congratulations Quinn and Tom on completing this demanding training course.

International Fire Fighters Day (IFFD).

Today is IFFD, which also coincides with St Florians Day, the Patron Saint of Firefighters.

IFFD honours the dedication, service, and sacrifice of volunteer and paid firefighters worldwide, particularly those that have paid the ultimate price in the line of duty and service.

IFFD is recognised by a blue ribbon over red, symbolising water over fire. It is also a day of thanks to current firefighters for their bravery, courage, and commitment to serving and protecting their communities.

OTH CFS crew gained invaluable fire behaviour experience helping DEW with the prescribed burn in Para Wirra this evening. Additionally, members and trucks from Para Reserve Brigade, Salisbury Country Fire Service and Tea Tree Gully CFS assisted with the prescribed burn.

All members were on foot along hoselays around the fires perimeter. Crew members watched for sparks landing across control lines and mopped up with water thieves.

The prescribed burn reduced fuel loads across 2.8ha but seemed like more with higher fire behaviour towards the end.

DEW have crews monitoring the fireground overnight and a day shift coming in tomorrow.

PSA - OTH CFS will be assisting with the prescribed burn in Para Wirra today.

A prescribed burn is planned at Para Wirra Conservation Park, Humbug Scrub Road near Humbug Scrub Wildlife Sanctuary on Thursday 2 April, weather conditions permitting.

The prescribed burn will start at 4pm and is likely to be completed by 8pm. Smoke may be visible within the burn area for several days.

▪️The area to be burnt is 2.8 hectares.
▪️This burn is to reduce fuel load in the area.
▪️Speed restrictions will be in place on Humbug Scrub Road.

National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia crews will remain on site until safe.
NPWS conducts a statewide program of prescribed burns to reduce the spread and intensity of bushfires, protect communities and enhance biodiversity.

Prescribed burning is just one tool used to reduce fuel loads across strategic areas of public and private land.

Prescribed burns will only be carried out when it is deemed safe to do so and may be cancelled at short notice.
