Congratulations to our Mayor, Leigh Gray, on being elected Vice President of the Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT). Mayor Gray has proudly served the Brighton community since 2005 and as Mayor since 2021, always showing a strong commitment to our municipality and local government across Tasmania. This appointment is a wonderful recognition of his experience, leadership and dedication to representing communities like ours at a state level. Congratulations Mayor Gray — we are proud to see Brighton represented in this important role. 👏👏👏

Leigh Gray - Brighton Mayor and Councillor

At the most recent General Management Committee (GMC) meeting, Mayor Leigh Gray was elected as Vice President of the Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT). He replaces former Vice President Paula Wriedt following her departure from local government in May. The Vice President is elected by other members of the GMC.

Mayor Gray has served on Brighton Council since 2005 and was elected as mayor in 2021. He is also on the Board of TasWaste South.

LGAT President Mick Tucker welcomed the appointment, noting that Mayor Gray brings significant experience and a strong commitment to representing the sector.

The GMC provides strategic direction for LGAT and consists of the President, the Lord Mayor and six elected members who represent the three electoral districts.

Paula Wriedt's resignation also creates a vacancy for a Southern Region representative on the GMC. A by-election will be called in accordance with the Rules of the Association.

Reconciliation Tasmania has chosen to frame National Reconciliation Week 2026 around "Truth. Reckoning. Change” rather than the broader national theme of "All In" to directly address a loud and clear message from Tasmanian Aboriginal people: the current mainstream approach to reconciliation is not delivering meaningful progress and the status quo must be challenged. 🖤💛❤️

National Sorry Day 2026 marks the 29th anniversary of the tabling of the Bringing Them Home Report in 1997. The Bringing Them Home Report shared the history of the Stolen Generations with the nation and made wide-ranging recommendations to address the enormous harm caused to survivors and their families. The theme for this year’s National Sorry Day is From Sorry to Action. The call is clear, we must move from words to action, and this needs to happen now, not in another decade. Acknowledging past harm is important, but acting to address it is critical. Sorry signals compassion, action delivers justice.
