📆 Today is National Threatened Species Day, a timely reminder that Cardinia Shire is home to many rare and threatened plants and animals, and that local sightings can make a real difference.
This September, you can help by joining Biodiversity Blitz 2026 and recording what you spot on the free iNaturalist app 📲
👀 Keep an eye out for species such as:
• Southern Brown Bandicoots in the lowlands around Koo Wee Rup, Bayles, Garfield and Bunyip.
• Swift parrots, with recent sightings at Deep Creek Reserve in Pakenham recorded on iNaturalist over two consecutive years.
• Growling grass frogs around wetlands, farm dams, drains and slow-moving waterways, especially on mild evenings after rain.
Look for clues, not just animals. Tracks, diggings, scats, feathers, nests and chewed leaves can all help tell a story of what lives nearby.
💚 If you spot wildlife, please enjoy it quietly and respectfully. Observe from a distance, stay on formed tracks where possible and avoid disturbing habitat.
💡 Biodiversity Blitz tip: Take clear photos, avoid touching or moving anything, and add a note about what you noticed.
