Illawarra Police Rescue Squad - NSW Police Force

Illawarra Police Rescue Squad - NSW Police Force Illawarra Police Rescue Squad (Formerly known as the Wollongong Police Rescue Squad) was originally formed in 1977 by the late Edward Doherty.

The Illawarra Police Rescue Squad and its members are accredited by the State Rescue Board of New South Wales as a primary accredited “General Land Rescue” unit for the Southern Illawarra suburbs down to the Minnamurra River and hold joint Vertical accreditation for the Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama LGA's with the SES. Police Rescue also performs a Police support role and the conducting and coordination of searches for Local Area Commands within Southern Region of the NSW Police Force.

Illawarra PRS and NSW SES Wollongong Unit NSW SES Dapto Unit attended Otford to assist a male injured after a small excavator had rolled down a steep embarkment about 30m down slope, a combined steep angle rescue was undertaken to bring the male back to the flat ground to be treated by NSW Ambulance and transport by road ambulance in a stable condition.

Illawarra PRS called up to Darkes Forest for a lost Bush walker. PRS and RFS personal navigated though some very thick vegetation to reach the male, who was not in a fit condition to walk out. With the assistance of the Lifesaver Helicopter, the lost male and the ground party were winch out. Male was treated for mild hypothermia before being reunited with family and heading home.
