Continuing our in-depth look at the appliances and equipment that make up the Nuriootpa CFS fleet, today we're taking a look at one of the more specialised capabilities within the Brigade — Nuriootpa HazMat.

Based on an Isuzu NPR 75-190 chassis

Hazardous materials incidents can present some of the most complex challenges emergency services can face. Unknown substances, dangerous atmospheres, chemical reactions and contamination risks.

Nuriootpa HazMat is equipped to provide equipment and resources required to identify, isolate and manage hazardous materials incidents, while supporting other emergency services and CFS crews across the State.

The appliance carries a wide range of equipment for dealing with chemical and hazardous substance incidents, including chemical protective clothing, respiratory protection, detection and monitoring equipment, containment equipment, spill response gear and a variety of tools for safely managing and controlling hazardous substances.

A major part of the HazMat capability is detection and identification. Crews have access to equipment that can assist in determining what we're dealing with and, importantly, whether an atmosphere is safe to enter. This information helps crews establish exclusion zones, select appropriate PPE and determine the safest way to approach an incident.

Containment and spill control is another major component of the appliance. A range of absorbent materials, overpack and containment equipment, chemical neutralisation and other specialist resources allow crews to prevent hazardous substances from spreading and minimise their impact on people, property and the environment.

Unlike a traditional fire appliance, HazMat isn't necessarily about putting out a fire. A large part of the job is about slowing things down, creating safe working areas.

HazMat incidents can involve anything from vehicle and industrial chemical spills through to unknown substances, damaged chemical containers, fuel incidents and incidents involving Lithium batteries. With the Barossa being home to a significant agricultural, industrial and transport sector, having this capability locally is a valuable asset to our community.

A regular sight here in the Barossa valley. With many large w**e storage and production facilities, us along with our other Northern Barossa CFS Group brigades respond to many alarms.
Usually accidentally set or sometimes malfunctioning, but you never know when a full scale emergency is unfolding.

Having a quick response, trained crews and specialist equipment like Nuri Pumper here, if the time comes. We are prepared.

For this weeks appliance deep dive, our Northern Barossa CFS Group Bulk Tanker unit.

NBAG11 isn't a Nuriootpa CFS Brigade unit, but a group used unit that lives with Nuriootpa CFS. Much like our Group Logistics car (Nuri based), Group Car 1 (Tanunda based) and Group QRV (Angaston based)

Northern Barossa Bulk Water is a standard specced Bulky based on a 2022 Isuzu Giga CYY 455HP AMT with a Moore Engineering built body and set up.

As the name implies, Bulky is a big water source on wheels. Communally seen in fire season parked somewhere safe and set up to refill incoming 14/34/44s and FFU's that are fire fighting directly.

Bulky can also be used a static water source in structural fires too.

It carries 10,800L of water in it's tank. It features a Chelsea PTO pump with incab and rear control panels.

It has 5 discharge outlets. 4x 65mm Storz outlets and 1x 38mm Forestry outlet.
A 65mm hydrant fill and a 65mm drafting inlet as well.

5x hard suction lines live down the side of the primary tank.

The single side locker carries various layflat hoses to feed other fire trucks or be fed by a hydrant. Plus the drafting pick up and basket, air lines for tyres and a hose branch for small fires if necessary.

Another cool feature is the removable 10,000L Collar dam set up. That can be set up on the ground, filled by Bulky and left for other fire trucks to fill themselves from. It also can be used for Helicopter tankers to fill from as well.

Bulky, much like all SA Country Fire Service fire fighting appliances, has a full burn over safety system including a Halo cab spraying system, thermal blankets, roll down window curtains and incab BA for 2 occupants.

A 32L fridge, Ration packs and of course, 2 deck chairs for those long jobs 😄

Bulky is a well loved assest to the Northern Barossa Group and we at Nuriootpa are proud to have it with us. 😃

On this week's deeper dive into Nuriootpa CFS' appliances and equipment. We have our 44 appliance.

Based on a 2019 Isuzu FTW139-260 Crewcab 4x4 with a Fraser Fire and Rescue Rural body on it.

44s claim to Fame is being utilised by NSW RFS in the Northern Territory for several weeks just after it's delivery. 😄

A fairly standard rural appliance as seen all over SA, 44s are the primary unit used for grass and bush fires. Having less non fire fighting equipment and more water on board, plus a full size work deck assits in the rural role.

Nuri 44 is fitted with a Darley 973lpm/250gpm pump driven by a Duetz BF3L2011w motor mounted on the rear.
1x 65m Storz inlet, 1x Storz 65mm outlet and 2x 38mm Forestry outlets on the rear for primary attack lines.

44 features 2 crew deck mounted monitors, plus 4x 38mm short removable branches for moving fire line attacks. An FFR incab control bullbar mounted monitor is also included.

44 carries many different hose lays including a 60m long live reel, 3x 38mm layflats and 4x 25mm layflat on dead reels. Plus multiple 65, 38 and 25s in lockers.

60L class A foam tanks plus several 20L class A concentrate drums are carried too.

Other non water based tools include; petrol chain saw, traffic cones, work lights, flashing beacons, drip tourch, fire ground flags, salvage sheet, first aid, AED, and hand tools (brooms, crowbars, halligans ect)

In cab features basic VHFs, GRN and UHF radios, a rurul TIC, map books and a truck mounted computer tablet for GPS, comms and firemapper programs.

As with all CFS fire tankers, 44 has a full emergency burn over HALO system and in cab emergency BA set up.

44 is a regular seen unit in Summer proving it's worth on many a bush and grass fire.

Cleaners accidentally set off alarm so no damage or harm. 😊

Continuing on our in depth look at Nuriootpa CFS appliances and equipment, the most well known of our fleet in CFS. Especially now with it's new siblings coming along for other brigades.

Nuriootpa Pumper. The first and only Scania heavy pumper CFS had until very recently.

Basically a SA Metropolitan Fire Service 16/17 specification heavy Pumper unit but painted white 😄

Based on a 2016 Scania P360 crewcab chassis with a Fraser Fire and Rescue body, its primary fire fighting stowage and set up consists of Godvia Prima PTO pump capable of 4000 litres per minute and 4000kpa of pressure, 3000L of water much like normal CFS 34 units. It also carrys 200L foam tank with spare drums of foam in a locker.
Pumper has 2 High pressure live reel hard lines for quick attack work such as structural and vehicle fires, 4 primary 65mm discharge outlets, plus a 150mm adapted inlet/out in the centre of the control panel. Many hoses of all sizes and types to fight fires directly but also to boost structural sprinkler systems you see in shopping centres and warehouses.
A fixed ground monitor is also stowed in locker.

Nuri pumper is a primarily urban pumping, road crash and vehicle fire appliance with all its stowage based on those roles.
It carrys several ladders ranging from very large, to rather small.

Being a Road crash unit, Pumper carriers a Holmatro hydrologic Road Crash kit.
A large amount of stabilisation wood cribbing, step chocks, Stabfast ratchet system, basic hand tools, makita powertools, glass manager bag, hard and soft protection, clean up absorbent, hazardous material bags and brooms/shovels. Plus a medical spine board set up for extractions.

As part of its structural fire fighting stowage, we carry ceiling hooks, quick cut saw, PPV fan, force entry tools and its unique in cab seating Breathing Apparatus set up, allowing back seat and front passenger seat occupants can don their BA gear on the to an incident.

Over all, Nuri Pumper is a favourite among our Brigade and a worthy asset to us for the area we help assit in. Its ability to perform many urban jobs extremely well has shown its worth with CFS. They have ordered several more of the newer 2025 heavy pumpers for the expanding urban areas CFS now covers.
