From 1942, this quiet little Wheatbelt town was one of the most important places in wartime Western Australia.
Nungarin was chosen for No. 5 Base Ordnance Depot, the state's biggest military storage and maintenance base, tucked safely inland, away from the coast, with good water, rail and roads.
At its peak around 1,200 troops were stationed here, including members of the Australian Women's Army Service.
