Last week the annual Partnership for Numinbah Valley Stakeholder Discussion, facilitated by Watergum, was held at NVEEC for the very first time.

Representatives from Seqwater, City of Gold Coast, Queensland National Parks, DETSI, Numinbah Valley Landcare and other environmental organisations came together to share updates on the many projects occurring across the valley — all contributing in different ways to catchment and source water protection for the Nerang River system. From revegetation and landslip remediation to invasive species management, water quality monitoring and habitat restoration, a huge range of work is occurring behind the scenes across the valley.

When it was NVEEC's time to share, we spoke about our role as connectors and storytellers within the catchment - sharing the stories of the organisations working to protect the valley through our teaching programs, while also creating opportunities for students and the wider community to directly connect with the catchment through our Numinbah - Holding Tight community field days.

We’re incredibly proud to be included in conversations like these. While many organisations are doing important environmental work across the valley, NVEEC engages with the catchment in a very different way - connecting students, volunteers and the wider community directly to the landscape through hands-on learning and restoration experiences.

A huge thank you to our wonderful cook Kerstein Trueman for preparing an incredible bush-inspired morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea for attendees throughout the day.

It was a fantastic day of collaboration, conversation and shared commitment to the future of the Numinbah Valley.

🌱 NVEEC P&C Honoured with Inspiring P&C Award 🌱

Last night, NVEEC P&C President Laura and Secretary Ben attended the P&Cs Qld State Conference Gala Dinner, celebrating the annual P&C Awards with school communities from across Queensland.

NVEEC P&C attended the evening as finalists in the Positive Community Partnerships category, where we were announced as runners-up to Wooloowin State School P&C and their beautiful project connecting students with elderly members of their community 👏🏽

As the awards ceremony drew to a close, we were completely shocked and humbled to hear Numinbah Valley Environmental Education Centre P&C called up once again — this time as the recipient of the annual Inspiring P&C Award 🤩

For our small P&C community, the recognition was incredibly meaningful. As Numinbah- Holding Tight approaches six years since commencing in 2020, the award helps acknowledge the project’s evolution into a long-term restoration initiative bringing together volunteers, schools and environmental organisations through hands-on conservation work in the Numinbah Valley.

We hope the recognition also highlights what is possible when P&Cs embrace community partnerships, long-term thinking and shared environmental stewardship within their local area.

Without permanent students, and therefore without the large pool of willing parents many school P&Cs naturally draw upon, NVEEC P&C has always relied heavily on community. As former Principal Kalindi Brennan often said, “NVEEC P&C is light on the P, but heavy on the C!” and her vision and leadership during the project’s formative years helped establish many of the partnerships that continue today.

In this light, we would especially like to acknowledge our dedicated NVEEC P&C members, whose ongoing commitment behind the scenes, from planning and coordination through to community field days, catering and volunteer support, has helped sustain the project over many years.

We also thank the hundreds of community volunteers, visiting schools, teachers and students who have contributed over time, and our returning school partners for connecting young people with authentic, hands-on environmental restoration within the catchment.

The project would not be what it is without the ongoing support of our principal project partner Seqwater, and valued advocates like Watergum, who have championed community engagement across the catchment.

Thank you to P&Cs Qld for hosting such a wonderful event. It was a privilege to spend time amongst so many passionate volunteers and school communities doing amazing work for young people across the state 💚

If you’d like to become part of our community, come and Hold Tight with us at our next community field day on 26/7/26! 🌱

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) - All In
❤️💛🖤. 💙🤍💚

We are proud to have hosted Robina State High jarjums for a day of culture and learning. The jarjums were ‘All In’ for a day on Country with Cultural Mentors Linda, Glenn and Mark.

We started the day with a traditional game of Keetan to set the day. All the jarjums got involved in the game and it was a tight game.

We moved to the fires to roast Bunya nuts and boil Lemon Myrtle tea. Kirstein made beautiful dampers and had Ooray jam (Davison plum) and Lemon Aspen jam for students to try some bush food.

Jarjums worked in small groups to create and build their own gunyahs down by the dam. What an amazing experience for them, and the creations were a sight to be seen.

We also got to take in Country and sounds with Glenn Barry playing the Didge in a serene part of the world. Not only ourselves but the pelicans and other animals around truly enjoyed the experience.

Jarjums then got to discuss the importance of fire in culture and the different ways in which different mobs made, used and maintained fire 🔥. Mark had us ‘All In’, with making and maintaining our fires from scratch.

We concluded the day with Yarns with Linda and the importance of reconnecting with Country and listening to what Country is trying to tell us.

Final last but most awaited was listening to Didge from both Mark and Glenn together and grounding ourselves with our learnings of an amazing day.

Before the jarjums got on the bus, you can’t go without one of Linda’s amazingly special hugs with love.

Lifelong bonds being made
❤️💛🖤 💙🤍💚

A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of hosting the Windaroo SHS Year 10 Geography students as part of our Environmental Change and Management fieldwork program.

This full-day program explores the connection between water quality and riparian vegetation within the Nerang River catchment using standard industry fieldwork techniques. Students investigate a range of sites, including the largely intact environment of Natural Bridge, undertake an in-depth riparian assessment at Bochow Park, and examine the outcomes of restoration works at Numinbah Hall.

It's always rewarding to see students applying their classroom learning in the field and developing a deeper understanding of catchment management and environmental change.

If your school is interested in learning more about this program, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

👇 Here's how Windaroo SHS reflected on their day with us:

National Reconciliation Week - ALL IN!
❤️💛🖤 💙🤍💚

Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.

🌞 Sunshine, seedlings and community. 🌱💚

After a week of rain, the sun came out for a glorious morning in the Numinbah Valley as twenty-eight volunteers gathered for our second Numinbah – Holding Tight P&C Community Field Day of 2026. Together, we continued the important work of restoring habitat, reconnecting wildlife corridors between Lamington and Springbrook National Parks, and protecting the headwaters of the Nerang River. 🌱

An impressive 382 native seedlings went into the ground, pushing the project beyond the incredible milestone of 19,000 native tube stock planted since 2020. 🌱🌳

It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces return once again, alongside new volunteers joining the project for the very first time. From long-time community supporters to families bringing along the next generation of environmental stewards, the morning had a real sense of connection and shared purpose.

Our project youth ambassadors led the way. Brighid shared the traditional story associated with the Numinbah Valley, encouraging volunteers to reflect on the deeper connections to the landscape. Jaxon and Balin supported the team out in the field, helping keep the momentum going, while our Junior Ambassador Roo showed our littlest volunteers the ropes. 🌿

The effort continued into morning tea — with generous community donations of delicious food, plenty of good conversation, and a well-earned chance for volunteers to reconnect after a productive morning on site. Huge thanks once again to our legendary NVEEC P&C Morning Tea Angels, whose hospitality is such a special part of these field days. ☕🧁

Thank you to everyone who showed up, dug in, and gave something back to Country. Together, plant by plant, we continue to strengthen this incredible landscape. 💚

🌊 This project is proudly supported by our principal project partner, Seqwater, whose ongoing commitment to restoration and catchment health continues to make this work possible.

🌿 Introducing Our New Principal at NVEEC 🌿

We are delighted to welcome Tommis Graham as the new Principal of Numinbah Valley Environmental Education Centre, officially joining us at the start of Term 2, 2026.

With extensive experience in Outdoor and Environmental Education, Tommis has worked across the Tallebudgera and Currumbin Valley Outdoor & Environmental Education Centres. Throughout this time, he has demonstrated strong leadership in building meaningful relationships with visiting schools, teaching colleagues, First Nations Elders, and community partners, while also strengthening communication and teamwork across staff—skills that are particularly important in supporting the connected and community-focused work that defines NVEEC. His reflective leadership style, built on listening, asking questions, and taking time to learn alongside others, is widely recognised as a key strength.

Tommis is no stranger to NVEEC. Over many years, he has visited the centre for professional development opportunities and, more recently, through his role supporting bushwalking qualifications delivered via the Tallebudgera RTO program. During this time, a strong interest in the unique educational opportunities offered at NVEEC—particularly in science, sustainability, and outdoor learning—has been evident.

He has also been involved in our "Numinbah- Holding Tight" project, participating through professional learning and as a community volunteer. This involvement reflects a strong alignment with the values of environmental stewardship, partnerships, and community engagement that underpin this important restoration initiative.

Alongside this experience, Tommis brings a passion for teamwork, new ideas, and innovation in environmental education. He has a strong commitment to embedding First Nations perspectives in learning and continuing the important work of progressing our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

We are excited to welcome Tommis into the NVEEC community and look forward to working together with our students, schools, families, and community partners as we continue to grow the important work taking place here in the Numinbah Valley.

Please join us in giving Tommis a warm Numinbah welcome! 🌱
