🐨Today is National Threatened Species Day and it was just great to meet some of the people and animals working to protect our precious native flora and fauna, and to see some of our endangered species up close.
I was particularly intrigued with Alice, a biosecurity detector dog, who is helping to keep Australia’s agriculture, environment and communities protected.
Alice is a cute and extremely smart little English Springer Spaniel who sniffs out biosecurity risks like pathogens in our soil and in native bushland.
I was pleased to learn that Alice will be in Gilmore working in the bush at Bundanon later this week!
It was also great to learn more about the endangered Eastern Quoll, Feathertail Glider - the smallest gliding mammal in the world - and the Coastal Diamond Python, all of which live in our region.
Nature is facing many challenges in the world, including climate change, invasive species and disease.
Under the Albanese Labor Government, 274 species (including the Greater Glider) and 16 ecological communities threatened with extinction have been protected under national environmental law for the first time.

❤️ It’s Women’s Health Week and I had an opportunity to meet and chat with survivors and advocates for women’s heart health in parliament this week.
Coronary heart disease remains a leading cause of death for Australian women.
Almost every hour of every day an Australian woman dies of coronary heart disease - that's around 20 women a day.
For women, the risk of cardiovascular disease changes as we age, so it’s important to be aware of the risk factors that specifically affect women, and what you can do to look after your heart health.

Community and disability work has changed over the decades. It’s become more complex and intense with workers having to navigate more to support clients. Whether it’s in your local neighbourhood centre, youth services, disability, homelessness, out of home care, it’s the wrap-around support that is crucial. Meeting up with community and disability workers, I heard directly about those challenges and the way forward.
A big shout-out to all our community and disability workers locally who do important work every day.

🎉 HAPPY NATIONAL TAFE DAY!
This morning, I was proud to join Minister for Skills and Training Andrew Giles to spruik the wonderful contributions TAFE, teachers and students make to our community.
Today we celebrate the world-class qualifications that TAFE delivers, and the opportunities that TAFE offers people of all ages and all backgrounds.
As a former TAFE outreach teacher I’ve seen first-hand how TAFE has helped local people back into the workforce, especially women after raising children who have gone on to work in aged care, community services, nursing and child care.
Through free TAFE we’re training more tradies to build the homes we need. Demand is now so high that the Nowra TAFE campus is expanding to cater for an additional 36 sparkies each year!
TAFE builds skills, it strengthens communities and it’s helping build homes and supporting our growing industry in Australia.
To all our wonderful TAFE teachers, and local businesses that employ our apprentices, a massive thank you!
I’ll always be a champion for TAFE because it really does change lives!

Good relations with our closest neighbour Papua New Guinea is in everyone’s best interests. With PNG we share a deep and enduring bond. From WWII and walking beside our troops, from Australia’s first external territory - the Australian Territory of Papua, to PNG independence and beyond, the PNGAus Partnership is strong.
Today in Parliament I met with a delegation of nine PNG church leaders from across faiths. Churches are an integral part of life across PNG and I was able to share the important role of local churches in Gilmore in supporting our communities.
My grandmother spent her early years on the Anglican christian mission at Sangara and Isivita in now PNG. Her uncle Rev Henry Holland remained with his mission for decades later until his mission met their end by the Japanese during World War II. Today, I got to meet Archbishop Nathan Ingen, Acting Archbishop of the Anglican Church of PNG and we had a bit to discuss.
Long live the enduring partnership between our nations. 🇦🇺🇵🇬
