TRUE AUSSIE MATESHIP: The Ultimate Winner of the Avon Descent

If you want to know what the spirit of the Avon Descent is truly about, look no further than the legendary display of mateship between rivals during the 2017 race.

On the morning of Day 2, veteran paddlers Paul Genovese and David Worthy woke up at the Cobbler Pool campsite to a competitor's worst nightmare. Someone had vandalised their kayak overnight, stealing their seats and the vital wing nuts holding their craft together. They were absolutely gutted and on the verge of throwing in the towel.

Step in Matt Dean and James Morfitt. Not only were they competing in the exact same class, but they were actually the leading double-kayak team in the entire race. Instead of taking the easy win, Matt and James immediately handed over their own spare wing nuts to help their rivals out.

While David made a desperate 30-minute dash to Toodyay to borrow replacement seats, Paul waited by the river. They finally launched more than an hour after their scheduled start time, left on the back foot, and forced to fight their way through the entire field.

Fueled by pure determination and the ultimate sportsmanship of their peers, Paul and Dave completely blitzed the grueling 72-kilometre valley stage. Against all odds, they crossed the finish line in Bayswater as the fourth fastest paddle craft overall and secured second place in their class!

Out on the wild waters of the Avon, the competition is fierce, but the mateship is always stronger. That incredible community spirit is exactly what makes this entire weekend so special every single year.

Today, we celebrate inductee Janice Mary James, a woman of Romani descent whose 45 years of service bridged cultures and preserved our deepest roots. Janice was a master historian, creating Australiaโ€™s largest collection of Aboriginal genealogical records and authoring 14 books to honor those who came before us.

Affectionately known as "Kabarli" (Grandmother) after being named an Honorary Noongar Elder, Janice also brought peace to our community by restoring the Northam Cemetery and creating the beautiful Melissaโ€™s Fairy Garden. A true guardian of our valleyโ€™s spirit.

You don't need a movie studio budget to be the star of the show!

Think your club, social group, or business canโ€™t enter the Bilya Festival Street Parade? Think again! You don't need an elaborate, expensive float to win over the Northam crowd.

This yearโ€™s Hollywood theme can be as simple as showcasing what you already have:
Vintage Classic: Do you or a club member have a polished vintage car? Just drive it down the route and let the classic opulence do the talking.
Red Carpet Ute: Take your business work ute, throw a red carpet over the tray, put on some movie-star sunglasses, and roll down Fitzgerald Street!
Pop Culture : Simply wear your team uniforms, grab a movie prop, and walk the route together.

It's a fantastic, low-cost team-building exercise and a great way to put your group in front of the whole town. Register at: www.northam.wa.gov.au/parade

๐Ÿ‘‡ Look at how simple and fun it can be! Tag your friends and family below if you recognise the legends in this 2018 flashback photo! ๐Ÿ‘‡
