Ku‑ring‑g*i SES is deeply saddened to share that our long‑serving volunteer, Ann O’Donovan, has passed away.

Ann served for around 32 years in field operations, incident management and community engagement, receiving multiple awards including the National Medal, SES State Medal and the SES Long Service Medal, as well as citations for major flood and bushfire emergencies.

She was known for her calm, caring nature and her willingness to quietly get things done, whether supporting our community on the ground or looking after fellow volunteers behind the scenes. Since 2007 she was a senior member of the SES Critical Incident and Peer Support programs, most recently supporting SES members across NSW who were impacted by traumatic events.

In 2025 Ann received the Ku‑ring‑g*i SES Flight Lieutenant Stuart Doyle Award for her outstanding contribution to the Unit. She will be deeply missed by all who served alongside her.

We extend our sincere condolences to Ann’s family, friends and colleagues.

This morning, Reinoud and I were proud to attend the Ku-ring-g*i Australia Day ceremony at Knox Grammar School, celebrating local heroes and welcoming new citizens into our community.

We were incredibly honoured to accept the award for Outstanding Contribution to the Community by an Organisation on behalf of our unit. This recognition truly belongs to every volunteer who gives their time, energy, and heart to helping and protecting others.

The Ku-ring-g*i Citizen of the year for 2026 is 102 years old Dean Simes from Computer Pals. Where he teaches seniors computer skills Dean is also a World War Two veteran, what an inspiration he is to our community.
Other recipients were Jill Green as Environmental Citizen of the year and Angelina Barnsdall awarded Young Citizen of the year.

A huge congratulations to everyone who became an Australian citizen today, and to all the award recipients recognised for their contributions. Days like today are a great reminder of what community — and volunteering — is all about
