Wathaurong Aboriginal Co Op

Wathaurong Aboriginal Co Op We are here to support and politically advocate for the Aboriginal community in the Geelong and wider region.

We meet the needs of our community by providing culturally appropriate, quality services and programs which promote sustainable economic growth, political stability, health and well-being and environmental care that is respectful of Aboriginal culture. The Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative acknowledges and accepts its responsibilities to the community in providing increased opportunities for social and economic advancement. We aim to have the Co-operative function in a way that will enable us to build and strengthen the social, cultural, economic, environmental and spiritual foundations of our community. We advocate for our community on issues which affect their lives and operate in a way that ensures the rights of our people are upheld. We work toward broader collaboration and maintaining partnerships with external stakeholders to ensure informed policy, program directions and service access and responsiveness. We represent community needs and interests in all of our dealings; this is the pure essence of community control.

Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative is currently seeking submissions from local artists in our community to feature on our 2025/2026 annual report publication.
The deadly artwork for last year's annual report (pictured) was created by Donna Conley, proud Dharug Ngyiampaa woman.

Any community member who identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is welcome to submit a piece of art for consideration, with the selected piece to be purchased by Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative for $500.

You can submit a piece you have already created, or you can create something new to tell the story of our last 12 months at Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative.

The selected piece will be used in our Annual report publication, printed in hardcopy and displayed online on our website, with the original piece (if a physical and not a digital artwork submission) to be displayed at a Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative location.

You can see past annual reports examples on our website here:
https://www.wathaurong.org.au/annual-reports/

You can submit a photograph of your physical submission, or a digital copy of your submission, by emailing it to [email protected]

Submissions must be received by 9am Monday September 21st for consideration.
If you would like more information, please email [email protected]

R U OK? Day is a reminder to check in with the people around us.

As Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, our strength comes from our connections to culture, family, community and Country. When someone is going through a tough time, a simple conversation can help them feel supported, heard and less alone.

You don't need to have all the answers. Taking the time to listen, show care and ask ""Are you OK?"" can make a real difference.
Ask your mob. Listen with care. Stay connected.

Thinking about becoming a foster carer?

Becoming a foster carer is a rewarding journey that helps provide children and young people with a safe, stable and nurturing home when they need it most.
In this post, we're breaking down the foster carer accreditation process, from your initial enquiry through to becoming an accredited carer and the ongoing support you'll receive along the way.

It takes a community to raise a child, and Aboriginal children thrive when they're supported to stay connected to their culture, identity, family, community and Country.

We welcome people from all backgrounds who are committed to supporting children and young people to thrive.

Are you ready to help foster their future?

Strong connections to culture, family, community and Country support wellbeing and resilience.

This Eating Disorders Awareness Week, let's continue raising awareness of eating disorders and body image concerns and support culturally safe care for our mob.

If a friend or loved one is struggling, checking in, listening without judgement, and encouraging them to seek support can make a real difference.

The Butterfly National Helpline provides free, confidential support and culturally informed care. Call 1800 33 4673 for a yarn, information, or help finding a doctor, counsellor, or other support for yourself or someone you care about.
