Message from the Commissioner

Steve Smith

Dear colleagues,

In the past year, I’ve spoken regularly about our collective role in shaping Queensland Fire Department into an organisation we can all be proud of, where every QFD member is valued and feels a sense of belonging.

An important tool in improving your workplace experience is the annual Working for Queensland (WfQ) survey which is now open.

A better workplace begins with real insights and the more information we get, the better we can prioritise what’s important to you. This is your chance to share what’s working, what’s not, and what could be done better.

In line with the Our People Strategy, your feedback will help us create a safe, capable and inclusive workforce that is representative of the communities we serve.

Last year, more than 1700 staff members gave their feedback in the 2024 WfQ survey and shared their experiences in the key areas of collaboration, leadership, development, communication, workplace behaviour and wellbeing.

The most positive results were at the team level in relation to workgroup effectiveness, respect and direct managers’ leadership. The least positive results were for development, performance and fair and equitable treatment.

Since the 2024 survey we have taken steps to address these areas including the establishment of the Everyday Respect Council, new and expanded training and development programs and improved the complaints management system.

We will continue to drive improvements based on insights from this year’s survey.

The survey is open for all paid QFD employees, and I invite all staff, no matter what service you are from or what position or rank you hold, to complete the survey as your voice matters.

Start the survey now: Survey link

Time: The survey takes around 30 minutes to complete

Closes: 28 September 2025

Who should complete the survey? All current paid QFD employees (even if you’ve just started with us).

I encourage you to take this opportunity to give feedback on your work experience and contribute to a better workplace for all.

If you have any questions about completing the survey, please contact the Workforce Experience Unit on 3635 3758 or [email protected].

Regards,

Steve Smith AFSM
