🚒 Keeping our community safe 🔥

Since 1 July, our volunteers have been kept busy responding to 17 fires across a large area, stretching from Elizabeth Valley through to Marrakai and Darwin River.

During this time, our members have dedicated an incredible 143.63 volunteer hours attending fires, protecting properties, assisting landholders and helping keep our community safe.

Every hour volunteered represents time away from family, work and personal commitments. We thank all of our members for their continued dedication, and our families and employers for the support they provide that allows us to respond when needed.

With the dry season continuing, it’s important to stay informed.

🎆 Territory Day 2026 Wrap Up 🚒

Territory Day has come and gone, and we'd like to thank our amazing community for doing their part to celebrate safely.

Throughout the evening, Elizabeth Valley responded to five small grass fires caused by fireworks across our response area. Thanks to the quick actions of our volunteers and early reporting from members of the public, each fire was contained before it could spread.

A huge thank you to everyone who:
🎇 Used fireworks responsibly
🚒 Had water and firefighting equipment on hand
📍 Chose safe locations away from dry grass and vegetation
📞 Reported fires promptly
🤝 Looked out for your neighbours

Your efforts made a real difference and helped keep our community safe during one of the busiest nights of the year.

A massive thank you also goes to our dedicated volunteers, who gave up their evening with family and friends to protect our community.

From everyone at Elizabeth Valley Volunteer Bushfire Brigade, thank you for helping make Territory Day a safer one. 🔥🚒 🎆

🎆 Happy Territory Day! 🎇

Territory Day is a uniquely Territorian tradition, a chance to get together with family, friends and neighbours to celebrate everything that makes the Top End special.

If you're celebrating tonight, remember these simple safety tips:

💧 Have a hose or buckets of water nearby.
🌿 Clear dry grass, leaves and other flammable material from your launch area.
🎇 Light only one firework at a time and always follow the instructions.
👨‍👩‍👧 Keep children supervised and spectators at a safe distance.
🚫 Never relight a dud firework. Wait at least 20 minutes, soak it with water, and dispose of it safely.
♻️ Wet down and clean up all fireworks debris once you're finished.
🐶 Keep pets indoors in a safe, secure place if possible.

Let's all do our part to ensure everyone enjoys a safe and memorable Territory Day.

From everyone at Elizabeth Valley Volunteer Bushfire Brigade, have a fantastic Territory Day and celebrate responsibly! 🚒🎆

🔥 Planned Burns 🔥

Over the weekend, Elizabeth Valley volunteers were out conducting planned burns at Strauss Airfield and along the Stuart Highway at Noonamah.

These planned burns are a vital part of preparing for the fire season, helping to reduce fuel loads and lower the risk of large, intense bushfires that can threaten our homes, businesses, and the beautiful Top End we all call home.

Our volunteers proudly give up their weekends to help keep the community safe, and we're grateful for the time, effort, and dedication they continue to show.

Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support. Working together, we can help make our community safer this fire season. 🚒🔥

🔥FIRE DANGER PERIOD DECLARED 22 JUNE TO 4 OCTOBER 2026🔥
Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS) and Bushfires NT (BFNT) have declared a Fire Danger Period across parts of the Top End from 22 June to 4 October 2026, marking the commencement of the 2026 Top End bushfire season.

The declaration applies to all fire weather districts within the Vernon Arafura Fire Management Zone along with Carpentaria West, Gregory North West, Gregory South East and Katherine Fire Weather Forecast Areas. For further details visit SecureNT.

The Fire Danger Period being declared means additional restrictions now apply to landholders within the Fire Management Zones including applying for a permit to burn.

While the Top End and Savanna regions are experiencing average fuel loads, above-average rainfall has delayed mitigation programs and limited access to some areas due to water inundation.

These conditions are expected to increase the risk and intensity of bushfires as the dry season progresses.

Territorians should take action now to prepare their properties and households.

🏠Landowners are urged to:
• Create a bushfire survival plan and make sure everyone on your property understands it
• Establish and maintain firebreaks at least 4 metres wide to allow access for firefighters
• Know the Australian Fire Danger Rating System (AFDRS) - it’s your early warning to take action
• Contact your local Bushfires NT Brigade for information pertaining to permits to burn
• Understand the Australian Warning System: Advice, Watch and Act, and Emergency Warning
• Stay informed via SecureNT, ABC Radio and BFNT and NTFRS social media channels

Community Notice – Smoke from Bushfire Activity

Our area is currently experiencing a significant amount of smoke due to a bushfire burning east of Redcliffe Road. At this time, we do not anticipate the fire impacting Redcliffe Road or our brigade response area; however, the situation continues to be closely monitored.

Bushfires NT crews are currently conducting isolated back-burning operations to strengthen containment lines and support ongoing suppression efforts. As a result, smoke may remain visible across the area for some time.

Residents, particularly those with asthma, respiratory conditions, or other health concerns, are advised to minimise outdoor activity where possible, keep windows and doors closed, and follow any medical management plans. If you experience breathing difficulties, seek medical advice or emergency assistance as appropriate.

If you observe any fire activity outside of the known incident area, please report it immediately by calling 000.

We appreciate the community’s cooperation and will provide further updates as information becomes available.

Huge congratulations to Dianne Tynan for being awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM)
