Women's Electoral Lobby, Australia The Women’s Electoral Lobby is a national, independent, non-party political, feminist lobby group We lobby for you. This page is not monitored full time.

We lobby politicians, unions, employers, educationalists and others on behalf of women and seek to change attitudes and practices which discriminate against women. WEL is dedicated to creating a society where women’s participation and potential are unrestricted, acknowledged and respected and where women and men share equally in society’s responsibilities and rewards. Welcome to the Women’s Electoral Lobby page. The page is open to anyone who wants to be part of our online community. This is an inclusive page for ALL women, transwomen and our supporters. The page is a place where you can find the latest information about the WEL but we also encourage everyone to leave comments, ask questions, add photos and videos, and be an active member of the WEL community. Open and lively conversation is welcome – here are a few simple rules to make sure it’s an enjoyable, safe place for everyone:

• We don’t allow spam, advertisements or endorsements of any commercial organisation to be posted on the page, so we will remove these at our discretion.

Steinem understood something fundamental about political progress: there is no finish line.

Every generation inherits both the victories and the unfinished struggles of the women before it.

So our tribute to leaders like Gloria Steinem cannot simply be gratitude.

It must be action.

Last week, in amid a steady hum of sexual assault allegations across Australia, St Joseph’s College’s headmaster, Michael Blake stood in front of his students and told them:

“I want every young woman who encounters a Joe Boy to be safer because you are there — not merely safe from you, safer because of you.”

WEL believes leadership from men is critical on these issues. More need to speak up.

40,087 reported sexual assault victims. In one year. The highest number Australia has ever recorded.

In 2024, recorded sexual assaults rose another 10%.

81% of victims were female.
39% were children and teenagers aged 10–17.

And in NSW, sexual assault reports have now increased for 13 consecutive years.

We have talked about consent.
We have strengthened laws.
We have watched change the public conversation.

So why are we still here?

Natassia Chrysanthos’s Sydney Morning Herald article is a powerful piece asking the question Australia cannot keep avoiding:

“This moment crystallises a very uncomfortable truth about sexual violence.”

Because this isn’t simply about individual scandals.

It’s about what happens in our schools, sporting clubs, friendship groups, homes and institutions — and the cultures of power, masculinity, silence and protection that surround them.

Changing the conversation mattered.

Now we have to change the culture.

This week is Homelessness Week 2026 (3 August to 9 August). Women are particularly impacted by housing insecurity and homelessness, due to the effects of family and domestic violence, which is the leading cause of homelessness, combined with our economic and other disadvantage.

One way you can take action is to sign this petition from the Everybody's Home Campaign, WEL has long advocated for the need to significantly increase Australia’s social housing and worked in partnership with Everybody’s Home. We suggest you share the petition with others, too!

Jacinta Allen has stepped aside as Victorian Premier. Allan was the state's youngest-ever female MP when she was elected on the eve of her 26th birthday in 1999, and only the second woman to hold the top job.

Speaking this morning, she encouraged more women to enter politics.

"Please don't look at what I have experienced this week and think, 'Stuff that. I don't want to be involved,'" she said.

"Look at the support I've experienced over my career, and think, 'I can make a difference here too.'"
