In June, 2017, the interim council of the City of Greater Geelong decided to close the Chilwell Library, Newtown, with very little notice and no community consultation. A small group of concerned local residents, members of the library, began the fight to save Chilwell Library, Newtown’s only remaining community hub and a highly valued, intimate, friendly, sun-filled space for young and old alike
to enjoy books, magazines, children’s programs, computers and company. With great support from our local community, this fight was ultimately successful. The Save Chilwell Library Group led this fight and developed this Save Chilwell Library page. In the years since, the Save Chilwell Library Group has not stopped the fight for Chilwell Library, but has continued to meet regularly and to lobby both the council and the GRLC for improvements to the library. As a result, the library underwent significant refurbishment in 2019. Since then, the Save Chilwell Library Group has been advocating for further improvements to this much-loved community space, including the addition of meeting rooms and internal toilets, and opening up the southern aspect to take advantage of the view over the park, while retaining the much appreciated sun-drenched northerly aspect and intimate, “second lounge room” feel. The Save Chilwell Library Group is now the Chilwell Library Group and this page will hereafter be known as the Support Chilwell Library page. As we move toward a new phase in the development and growth of Chilwell Library, we continue to seek the support of you, the users of Chilwell Library, and local residents of the area.
