Across regional, rural and remote Queensland, many councils operate early childhood education and care services that are essential to supporting families, strengthening local workforces and helping communities thrive.

Today in Canberra, councils met with Minister for Early Childhood Education Jess Walsh, to advocate for the long-term viability of these services and ensure children, families and communities have access to the support they need, no matter where they live. 💛

"These proposed federal funding reductions would impact every Queenslander, because even if it's not your hometown that has roads destroyed, or beaches swept away or airport runways stripped of tar, the changes mean Queensland would be picking up the tab for what Canberra would previously have paid. This will touch every single Queensland household as if there is not the funding available to rebuild roads when they are cut, food and produce can't move, driving up prices on the dinner table."

Today, 25 councils covering 63% of Queensland voted to endorse a unified message to the Federal Government on behalf of the communities they represent.

The message is clear: reverse the proposed changes to Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, or put regional jobs, local businesses and community recovery at risk.

🗨️ "...it’s cost shifting onto our communities again...that's $390 million we have been getting in assistance. Our ratepayers are going to have to foot that bill under the proposed changes to DRFA." - Mayor Liz Schmidt, Charters Towers Regional Council.
🗨️ "We don't know what we don't know at this point, and that's a major concern for me." - Mayor Barry Hughes, Etheridge Shire Council.
