A reminder that tomorrow is a dress up day at Newcomb PS!

Students are encouraged to dress up as an animal for the day, if they don’t have a costume/dress up they can still wear casual dress or a simple headband/face paint instead.

We are fundraising for save our turtles. Children need to bring a gold coin and the JSC members will collect the coins from each classroom during the morning sessions.

It’s also national walk to school safely day so if you get the chance to walk part or all of the way please do!

Today we celebrate our amazing Education Support Staff. Our school would not run without these incredible humans and we are so lucky to have them all on our team, working with our students.

If you get a chance today (or any day) to say thankyou to an ES please do. They teach, regulate, support, nurture and care for our students to ensure that everyone can learn and everyone can be involved.

Thankyou ES for the incredible work you do at Newcomb PS, enjoy a day that is about celebrating you!

We were fortunate to have Leading Senior Constable Leonie Hill visit to speak to our Year 5 and Year 6 students today. As a Community Engagement officer, Leonie shares important information with our students each year about cybersafety and cyberbullying.

Students learnt about staying safe online, being respectful in digital spaces, and what to do if they experience or witness unsafe behaviour online.

Constable Leonie also discussed the Australian social media age restrictions, including that many major social media platforms are now restricting accounts for children under 16 years of age.

Some of the key messages from today included:
• Thinking carefully before posting or commenting online
• Keeping personal information private
• Understanding the impact of cyberbullying
• Knowing how to seek help from trusted adults
• Using technology in safe and responsible ways

We are grateful to Leonie and the community engagement team for their time and expertise.

We have had an exciting start to Term 2!

On Monday we were incredibly grateful to Shantelle Lucas-Baillie, our Koorie Education Support Officer, and Uncle Richard Fry who worked with our staff for the day to lead the Cultural Perspectives in Education training program. Throughout the day staff deepened their understanding of truth telling and Aboriginal perspectives with a focus on strengthening a culturally safe and responsive school community.

On Tuesday we were thrilled to welcome back our students for the new term. Classrooms were buzzing and students and staff were excited to be reunited!

On Wednesday we welcomed back Mrs. Buck who provided some professional learning for staff in the classroom on Phonics Plus. This was a great opportunity to learn from Rachael’s experience in writing the new phonics curriculum.

Tonight our staff attended the Guiding Growing Minds session with Dr.Billy Garvey and Rebecca Harris. This was an incredible opportunity to hear about the science of child development and mental health. The session covered a number of themes including the role of educators in children’s lives and the importance of all members of a school community feeling safe, connected and celebrated. It was a wonderful opportunity for both confirmation and motivation for our team.

What a great start to Term 2 with lots of learning and reconnecting for both students and staff!
