We are pleased to be delivering for the NSW Government a major upgrade to Ironbark Creek in Wallsend, helping strengthen flood protection for local residents and businesses.
We’ll upgrade 660m of the channel through the CBD, including widening works, new floodwalls and naturalised sections to reduce flood impacts while improving environmental outcomes.
Working alongside all levels of government, this project is a key step toward better managing flood risks in the Wallsend CBD while supporting the long-term health of the creek and surrounding environment.

Our water storage levels remain steady this week, with scattered showers across catchments this past week.

It’s important to keep an eye on storage levels. Our region goes into water restrictions at 60%, which we were closely approaching a month ago before the east coast low.

Total storage levels are 70.4% as of Monday 15 June, down 0.1% since last week.

While some of us are enjoying today’s public holiday, our catchments are still enjoying their top up from the recent rain. 💧

Although it’s great to see our storages steadily increasing, there’s still a warm and dry winter forecast, with our storages lower than average for this time of year. Last June, they were 17.5% fuller than now.

Total storage levels are 70.5% as of Monday 8 June, up 0.6% since last week.

May progress at the Belmont Desalination Plant 💧
The treated water storage tank is really taking shape, while work inside the Microfiltration Reverse Osmosis (MFRO) building is well underway. The heart of the desalination process, MFRO is where seawater is first filtered to remove particles, then pushed through specialised membranes to remove salt and produce fresh drinking water.
Offshore, marine works are also progressing, with jacking extensions in place to support caisson sinking for the ocean intake structure. Learn more about the project at: hunterwater.com.au/desal

After more than 55 years of service, a critical bearing on one of the Grahamstown Water Treatment clarifiers has been replaced, with the help of some very cool liquid nitrogen (about -196°C cool 😉).

The original bearing required a challenging lifting operation, while the new bearing was cooled in liquid nitrogen to shrink the metal before being quickly lifted into place, before it could expand to its normal size.

Clarifiers are an important part of our water treatment process, removing solid particles through sedimentation, ensuring safe and reliable drinking water keeps flowing for the community.

We've had rain hallelujah 🙌

Last week’s east coast low delivered rain in all the right places. Heavy rain over the Williams River, Grahamstown Dam and Tomago Sandbeds catchments meant an excellent top up for our water storages.

With river flows continuing from the downfall, we’re continuing to pump water into our dams, leading to further increases to our storage levels - even as the sun has come out.

Total storage levels are 69.9% as of Monday 1June, up 5.9% since last week.

Ever wondered what the inside of a reservoir looks like?
This is inside the Elermore Vale 1 Reservoir while it's offline for refurbishment.
With the water drained, you can see the scale of the structure: towering internal columns supporting the roof, a vast steel plated floor, and space that normally stores 45 megalitres of water - that's equal to around 18 Olympic swimming pools.
The work at Elermore Vale is part of our ongoing investment in renewing and maintaining critical infrastructure across the region.
Our network includes:
🔹 61 reservoirs
🔹 6 water treatment plants
🔹 94 pumping stations
🔹 5,000+ km of pipelines
Projects like this help ensure a safe, reliable water supply for our community now and into the future.

We’re helping protect koalas by restoring and reconnecting habitat around Grahamstown Dam. 🐨

Koala habitat mapping from the NSW Koala Strategy shows land around the dam is vital to the endangered species’ long-term survival.

We’ve recently planted 6000 tubestock to supplement native regeneration in areas where extensive pine infestations have been removed at the dam’s southwestern end.

This project has been assisted by the NSW Government through its Environmental Trust.

Our catchments have had a healthy amount of rain this past week! 👏

The rainfall over the past couple of weeks in the Barrington Tops has also boosted our river flows, allowing us to pump water from the Williams River into Grahamstown Dam.

Total storage levels are 64% as of Monday 25 May, up 1.6% since last week.
