JOURNEY OR DESTINATION?

“Are you a person who enjoys the journey or are you someone who can’t wait to get to the destination?”

Janet will tell you that I am a person who likes to get to the destination, and the sooner the better. I mean, I don’t really want to stop and smell the roses or take in all of the sights. When we go on holidays she wants to stop and read every sign that tells about the history or happenings in a place. I tell her to just take a photo and read it later; we need to get moving.

I know, I know, rushing to the destination is exactly that – RUSHING! And when you do that, you miss some great things along the way. Also, there is a process in the journey that makes sure we arrive in good order.

It can be like that at times in my Christian life; I want to rush; I want to arrive; I want to get to the place of strength & maturity and the sooner the better. The problem with this approach as a disciple is that if we rush, we will miss things along the way that are for our good; we will inevitably short-circuit our own development in becoming Christ-like, not to mention, we might not arrive in good shape.

The Christian life is a process not an event. We don’t instantly arrive the day we are born-again. We actually begin a journey.

SUDDENLY! Really?

Sometimes things just happen too slowly for me. I mean, I get frustrated and impatient when the microwave doesn’t instantly cook my meal or traffic isn’t moving quick enough. Even more to the point, I get a bit anxious when I have to wait for the doctor’s report or when things at work aren’t happening to plan or when I am left questioning if my son/daughter is ever going to come back to God. This is when my trust in God is tested; when is He going to do something?
There is a word used in the New Testament that leaves me wondering – it is the word “suddenly.” I wonder why God takes so long to move suddenly. He often doesn’t do things according to our timing. The disciples must have been wrestling with this when Jesus left them and returned to heaven. As they were meeting, praying, waiting – "Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven…" And you know the rest of the story; the church was born.
Can I encourage you to listen for the sound of heaven; that’s when God moves suddenly. The sound we can hear today is the sound of His voice in His Word – He has given us great and precious promises.
I pray today you may be able to hear that still small, yet incredible voice of God that gives you His promise, telling you that He is at work in you according to His good pleasure – SUDDENLY!
