3% and 3025 votes. A small blip on the electoral radar but a blip, and an improved one, nonetheless, thanks all!

In the by-election for Newcastle Lord Mayor today, the combined Green and Socialist primary vote was 24% — just under the historically low combined Labor and Liberal vote of 24.5% (16.1% Labor, 7.2% Liberal). Independent candidate Gavin Morris got over 50% of the primary vote. Our vote of over 3% is an increase on the 2.6% we won in the 2024 election of Newcastle mayor. Thank you to the many volunteers who helped us letterbox, put up signs and on polling booths. Many people complemented us on the strong and principled positions we put forward in media interviews, at candidate forums and on social media.

Steve O'Brien, the Socialist Alliance candidate for Newcastle Lord Mayor addressed the candidates forum hosted by Hunter Community Forum in Town Hall on April 9. He told the forum that the increasing corporatisation of Council was taking the Council further away from the people. "We have to bring Council closer to the people."
