It’s been a big week for the team here at Derwent Valley SES!
Some of our newest members finally got their hands on the tools — and the smiles say it all.

Saturday had our crew attending the State Conference, and despite the rain rolling in on Sunday, the team pushed through maintenance tasks before moving straight into navigation and radio training.

We’re proud of the effort our volunteers put in every week, rain or shine.

Want to see us in action?

Join us next Saturday from 5pm at Circle Street, New Norfolk the Dark NorFo event.
We’ll be running a Road Crash Rescue demonstration at 6:30pm — come along, say hi, and see what we do.

It’s National Volunteer Week and we’re saying thank you to all our Tasmania SES volunteers who assist us and the community.

Today we’d like to thank the employers who support our volunteers, and our self-employed volunteers - you are an essential part of our service.

Last night our SES unit joined a fantastic BBQ to celebrate International Volunteers Week with the Lions Club of New Norfolk, bringing together volunteers from across the Derwent Valley.

We were joined by members from Lions, Rotary International, New Norfolk Scout Group, Magra CWA, Lachlan Fire Brigade and Your Community Food Hub for a relaxed evening of connection and conversation. It was great to hear everyone share what motivates them to volunteer — with giving back to the community a clear common theme.

While our roles may differ, the passion and dedication in the room was the same across every organisation.

A big thank you to everyone who came along, and to Derwent Valley Council for their Quick Response Grant, which helped support the event. Thanks to their contribution, we were also able to put aside enough supplies to support our WOW Day BBQ tomorrow.

Last night we ran a tough, hands-on training exercise alongside Brighton SES.

The scenario was deliberately rough — a 4WD had rolled multiple times and ended up well down a steep hillside, around 20 metres off the road. Another casualty was located even further down, requiring a stretcher winch back up.

It was a hard job. Crews were constantly moving up and down the hill, again and again, setting up and adjusting multiple rope systems just to make access and recovery possible.

To get it done, the team had to split resources, manage multiple rope lines, and coordinate carefully to safely recover all five casualties.

For some of our newer members, it was their first real exposure to the physical and mental demands of this kind of rescue — something you can’t fully appreciate until you’re in it.

After a long push, the job wrapped up around 10pm, with some very tired crews packing up after a solid night’s work.
