Defence personnel, veterans, community members, councillors, and elected representatives gathered yesterday evening at Mount Claremont Community Centre for the Australian Government’s information session on the future of Irwin Barracks.
Defence Australia outlined the divestment and transition planning process, with Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Matt Keogh and senior departmental leaders responding to extensive questions on heritage, environmental considerations, redevelopment impacts, and Australia’s broader military capability needs. Federal Member for Curtin Kate Chaney and State Member for Nedlands Jonathan Huston also addressed attendees.
No matter what decisions are made at the Federal level, the 61.5 hectare Irwin Barracks site will continue to sit within the City of Nedlands. Recognising the significance of this precinct, Mayor Leonie Browner, Deputy Mayor Jennifer Mathews and Councillors Stephen Kobelke, Eliza Clapin, Rachel Kristensen and Charles Pan were present.
Defence Australia also confirmed they will work closely with the City throughout the process, and we remain mindful of the concerns raised by current and former Defence personnel and their families.
