With the poll closed I’d like to take a moment to thank all of the people who have helped, encouraged, advised and supported me in my bid to win a seat at the Council table for the next four years.

Whether by pasting posters in your windows or on your fences, sharing my Facebook posts, commenting to the posts, or taking the time to find me and chat… you have made the journey an easier one.

And, of course, to those who voted for me.

You all know who you are… Thanks

Now we just have to wait and see… Ann and I have fingers crossed.

Roads are still on my mind. Specifically our major road, the Princes Highway.

Tuesdays Portland Observer carried the front page report on Minister Horne’s $964M Road Maintenance Blitz. Sadly none of the upgrades listed for the Princes Highway include any of the road’s sections within Glenelg Shire.

The new Council MUST URGENTLY create its own Road Maintenance Blitz Advocacy Campaign to ensure some of the $675M earmarked by the Minister for rural roads is spent fixing the many dangerous patches of the Princes Highway between the SA border and Port Fairy.

We deserve better.

Sporting facilities - more specifically women playing netball in the rain - is on my mind.

I’ve avoided the bidding war for new sporting facilities until today when I was driving past Portland’s main netball facility at Flinders Park.

Seeing the strangely shaped pavilion there reminded me that Portland City Council built it in 1992 as Stage 1 of a two stage project.

Stage 2 was budgeted for 1995-96. It was (from memory) two indoor netball courts to be built in behind the pavilion.

I think 6-700 netballers who use Flinders Park all through the year have waited long enough. 28 years later, it’s time Council finished the project.

That also means having a look at netball facilities across the Shire. I suspect women play in the rain everywhere, something we need to fix.

Roads are on my mind.

Putting Council’s roads to one side, I thought I’d have a go at reporting the condition of the Heywood - Portland section of the Prince’s Highway.

I’d been told to report it to “Transport Australia” but the hat drew a blank on my computer search.

After ~20 minutes I found a Vicroads site that seemed to be the place. Three places to describe the problem. Nowhere to upload a photo. And a choice of getting a response or not getting a response.

I asked for a response. And given that I described the road condition as potentially deadly to motorcyclists in certain circumstances, I’d hope I get one.

NOT a simple process. And obviously, will have to be inventive to get something done if I’m a councillor in 2 weeks time.

Happy to give it a red hot go though.

I’ve organised a PORTLAND Listening Post.

Tomorrow, Sunday October 13, at Bahloo from 11am until 3pm.

Drop down and have a chat over a cuppa about what you’re looking for from Council over the next 4 years.

I’m buying the cuppa.
Authorised, Mike Noske, 62 Devlins Street, Narrawong.

Good of Heywood Bakery to allow me to camp on one of their outside tables for a Listening Post next Tuesday, October 15.. I’ll be there from 10am until 3pm.

Come down for a cuppa and a chat about what you want or need from Council over the next 4 years. I’m buying the cuppa.

Given that Duane Angelino has breakfast there pretty much every morning, they even allowed me to put up a poster. There were conditions though…

Over the past week I’ve had a number of people asking me for my suggested preferences.

I’ve given it lots of thought tonight and, given that only 26% of Shire residents surveyed this year agreed with the direction the Council has been going, perhaps it’s time for a complete change of direction.

So here is my how to vote card. Spoiler, I’ve identified the 6 other candidates I think are most aligned with my view of how Council can move forward.

The other 6 candidates? Please choose your own order. But remember, for your vote to be counted, you HAVE TO fill in the numbers 1 through to 13 in the boxes of the voting card.

Really interesting process yesterday following on from my Listening Post at the Narrawong Post Office.

A consistent comment from the people who dropped in for a chat was the state of the roads in the township. The grass roads were brought up as an example.

After we’d finished I went for a drive and was surprised to see the number of “streets” that were, indeed still grass. And I posted some images.

Following which, I was dumped on from a great height by residents who like their grass streets and basically told me to stop trying to change their village. Valid comments if that’s what I was trying to do.

The point of real consultation is to work out what you want for your communities - not what I want.

If I’m on Council at the end of the election, I’ll be seeking a process of real consultation across the Shire as we develop the next 4 year Plan for Council. And we WILL LISTEN to what you want for your communities.

If YOU want more of a say in YOUR future, Vote 1, Mike Noske.

I’ve been commenting about bad roads in my radio ads and speeches. But I didn’t realise just how bad some of them are.

I was steered towards some doozies in Narrawong by residents who dropped in for a cuppa with me today.

Maintenance? You need a ride on mower to maintain some of the “ROADS” in Narrawong.

Seriously, these are signposted Roads!

I’m starting what I call “Listening Posts”.

The first one is tomorrow at the Narrawong Old Church Post Office. I’ll be there from 10am until 3pm and anyone is welcome to drop down and tell me what you expect from your council over the next 4 years.

Whether you’re talking attitude, accountability, the “rate cut”, new sporting or community facilities, organisational culture, or suggestions for little things that you think will make living here better… Come and tell me over a cuppa - and I’m buying the cuppa.

For Portland people, the Post Office is about 200m past the fire station.
