Pete Manypeney. The second Pete M in the brigade, also known as rePete.

Pete moved to Narrawong a couple of years ago and got straight into it. He’s got a background in telecommunications maintenance - exactly what that involves is still a bit of a mystery to most of us, but it clearly involves fixing things, solving problems, and being patient.

More importantly, he’s just a solid, reliable, all-round top bloke. The kind of person you want beside you when things get busy.

So, we figured if he’s the top bloke… he may as well have the top job.

Congrats Captain Pete 👏

Tuesday 5 May at 7:00pm.

The meeting will include the election of office bearers and updates for the year ahead.

In the past year we’ve had a few new faces join, but at times we are still finding ourselves short on volunteers, so a few more members would be very welcome.

With our current operational members, we could crew both trucks if everyone is available, but we may struggle to sustain a second shift or cover extended incidents.

If you live in a rural area and expect the brigade to turn up when it’s needed to help protect your property, it’s worth considering doing the same for your community if you’re able. Even if you work full time, or are away a lot.

Winter is the perfect time to complete training so you’re ready to get on the truck by next fire season.

Training is online, plus a practical session. You’ll be supported the whole way.

No experience needed, just a willingness to help your community.

See you there.

Fire restrictions end tomorrow, 01/05/2026 — but the end of the season doesn’t mean the end of common sense.

Before lighting up, stop and assess:

• Is it going to be windy later?
• Will smoke drift across roads and reduce visibility?
• Will it affect neighbours, stock or nearby homes?
• Can you stay there and supervise the burn the whole time?
• Do you have water, tools and equipment ready to extinguish it?
• Are conditions safe not just now, but for the next few days?

If you’re planning a private burn-off, please register it at https://firepermits.vic.gov.au/notify. This helps avoid unnecessary callouts for volunteer brigades and means crews can stay available for genuine emergencies. If smoke or flames are reported and the burn isn’t registered, firefighters may still be dispatched.

Before burning off, make sure you:

• Comply with CFA and local council rules
• Let neighbours know if smoke or fire may affect them
• Check the weather forecast
• Have a firebreak of at least 3 metres clear of flammable material
• Have enough people on site to monitor and control the burn safely

Burn smart. Burn responsibly. Protect your community.

We are concerned about heightened fire conditions over the next few days ( temperature and increasing winds) coinciding with the removal of fire restrictions. While it’s quite green around our patch some people assume they can light up without assessing the risk factors and a lack of preparation, so please assess the weather, ensure you are prepared with adequate water, continually monitor any burns and register them with CFA on 1800 668 511. Just because the fire restrictions end at midnight tonight doesn’t mean all the risks have disappeared. Maybe leave it till next weekend !!

Meet Pete “Princess” Mcervale 👑

We’ve got two Pete M’s — this one’s Princess.

30 years CFA 🚒
15 years with Branxholme
15 years with Narrawong

By day, Pete’s behind the wheel of a truck 🚛
By night (and whenever the pager goes), he’s on the truck again — just a different kind 🔥

If you live here, you can do your bit too. You don’t need 30 years — you just need to start.
